Impressive design, not just decorative, but expressive, as well! Kudos!

Looking good, especially perched up there like that! I love how you positioned the wings down instead of spreading up. That's a wonderful head and tail, too - I know nothing about origami but I imagine how hard it must be to get those effects.

SUUUUUUUUUUN!

black is really hard to photograph, if you want to see the details better, you'll be able to appreciate them better in the photos i uploaded earlier

It takes time to make a model detailed, sometimes it takes as much time as completing the rough base for the model or even more. when it comes to the shaping, i don't really have an exact method for it, it then becomes more like clay sculpting than origami, push here, pull there, squeeze this thing and readjust this part, it's just tweaking on top of tweaking and seeing if i like it or not.

Those already looked very promising but the culmination of glory is best visible here imho
Heheheh, it seems that's how every artform works. And here I was thinking origami had to be perfect the first time or the attempt would be forfeit. This is much more fun, and this way every piece can also have its own personality in a way.

definitely! even something as simple as the traditional crane can vary from person to person somebody likes the head and legs more vertical, somebody else makes them more horizontal, somebody makes the head smaller, somebody makes the head bigger (which is something i tend to do ) and somebody leaves the model as it is, and somebody pulls on the wings to make the model 3D. best part is there is no right and wrong. as long as you like the result, whatever way got you there was the right one.

I've got to admit i like the final stages of folding the most, because up until that point the model is very geometrical, but then you can really go in and add a whole another layer onto that angularity by rounding it off and add curved folds without no clear reference, press the model in different ways to make some parts come together and spread out some other parts. That's where most of the fun is, really. up until that point, the mode is going to look roughly the same no matter who's folding it, but try as you might, you're never going to fold an intermediate or complex model exactly the same way as someone else. But that's what's great about folding. Just like there are cover versions of music, everyone has their own unique folding style, and each time one person folds something, it can still be different from the previous folds, it's most likely even going to be!

A few years ago, people from Czech Origami Society and I were tasked to fold 100 hands for a charity organization supporting deaf people (hand, sign language, this sort of symbolism) we were all folding bases for the hands, and the shaping was left up to me, to minimize the variations, so no one can say they bought a "nicer" hand than somebody else. in the end, no two of the hands looked alike even when i'd been the only one giving them the final shape. on one hand, fold one hundred of the same thing exactly the same way and you'll go mad, on the other hand, i couldn't really match one hand to another even if i tried. in the end, each hand turned out to be original and everyone was happy, and that's what matters.

Ooh, do a bobblehead crane Or indeed, a 'cover' of someone's famous work!
That initiative is a really cool idea. Aww, that's great. Individuality is worth more than being objectively better, if that's even possible at all. It's an objective truth that everything is subjective

Hm, I tried to google paper crane chibis but it appears there aren't any...

PeteriDish In reply to Sunjinjo [2016-06-22 21:12:16 +0000 UTC]

Another alternative would be a normal crane without a head, and the head would be from a separate sheet and could therefore bobble around like an actual bobblehead

PeteriDish In reply to Sunjinjo [2016-06-22 21:10:56 +0000 UTC]

It really isn't chibbifiable as it is, at least not very much. However, an alternative design that evoques the aesthetics of a traditional crane but has an oversized head would be possible.

PeteriDish In reply to Savis-Erren [2016-06-20 15:57:14 +0000 UTC]

Ok, what do you want me to cover in the video? I feel like i'd rather discuss the techniques i used in more broader terms rather than complete step by step instructions.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Savis-Erren In reply to PeteriDish [2016-06-20 20:41:28 +0000 UTC]

Well, rather then doing step by step instructions, perhaps what you could do is do a time lapse video where you slow down the video at points that you find give the piece the most life? And perhaps show and explain what you think gives it that character?

I seem to recall you saying somewhere in these comments that during the basic stages of construction most every piece looks roughly the same, and that it is later as you approach the end that it become more like molding clay and each artist and piece takes on it's own life. So also maybe consider a 2 part combination of instruction where you show the "how to" breifly to people unfamiliar with the basic construction at the beginning of the video; And then, once the basic instructional section is finished you show in more detail how you make the piece your own and unique?

As far as origami goes I am woefully inexperienced, but I love watching people who are good at their craft work and learning from them in doing so; whatever you choose to do with a video, I'm sure I'd probably watch it just for the experience of seeing something so unique take shape, even if all you did was a simple time lapse of you folding one of these remarkable dragons there is still much to be learned from watching the hands of a master at work.
