Only about 1/4 of the lifting strength of the Cargo Claw comes from the physical grapplers' grip, with the greater part provided by a simple tractor emitter located on the centerline between them. Technically, the tractor emitter alone can be used to hoist freight, but at severe cost to operating speed. The claws provide stabilization and prevent tractor detachment due to lateral shear during the typically rapid movement of the assembly, and the application of the grapplers allows for the most rapid lading, especially of standard cargo pods. Irregular or fragile items can still be transferred by the claw system, but at far slower speeds, as these cannot be grappled effectively, if at all.
