It is strange to think is how little one actually saw of the Falcon in the original saga, inside or out, in spite of its strong presence — but the unseen adventures that were implied by its age, its scars, its swashbuckling captains! In comparison, the other ships were generic vehicles with no real suggested history beyond what was shown: cool designs and fun to watch on the screen, but lacking in such individual character.

Amusingly, the interior set's angles and dimensions didn't properly correspond to where things were supposed to be onboard. I first saw Star Wars when I was 6, and even then I wondered how something that size and shape could fit multiple escape pods.
There's a picture I saw somewhere that overlaid the set floorplan onto a scale view of the Falcon. It was... embarrassing.

As I am all too aware: it is these inconsistency — and the rather poor attempts to officially reconcile them — that motivated this project.

Indeed, a character, one of the original trilogy's' stars,
Perhaps this is one of the things that bothers me most about the Disney revival of the franchise: the Falcon, like so many key elements of the established saga, seems to no longer be treated as quite a character in her own right anymore, but rather just a prop, an obligatory trope — and what I have glimpsed of the upcoming Han Solo film seems especially... disrespectful.
This battered, old freighter simply means something far more to those of us who grew up with Star Wars as a imaginative touchstone, I suppose, more than merely a nostalgia hook or merchandising bonanza, today.
But this is treading dangerously close to contentious territory.
I will close by simply saying I feel I owe this venerable star the best treatment I can manage, to see if I can capture some of that wonder and mystique that made us love her so, and perhaps accomplish something more than has been done before, worthy of that legacy...
...and admit that a part of me envies your childhood good fortune.
