Description I'm part of an illustration club/networking/group thing on Tumblr now. The group does various weekly or fortnightly prompts, and this is what I did for the most recent prompt. You actually get the better deal here on dA, since I can upload a larger viewing size.

I think I got too caught up on the tiny details instead of the bigger picture.

Love the amount of detail you put into these, down to the very scales on it.

The inclusion of the mushrooms is what totally makes this one for me. Something about them makes him benign and approachable in spite of that expression. Also, dat beard. :3

He probably lies around in mossy forests most of the time. People just take him for a collection of large boulders and hills. Then sometimes he gets up and flies around at night. Or something like that.

That would be unfortunate for anyone who decided to go camping on his back.

You don't camp on boulders. XD

Wow, I absolutely love the composition on this. I adore all the scales--they're drawn so stylistically!--but I see what you mean about getting caught up in the details as a few of the body segments seem to blend into each other.

Other awesome things: the subtle tinges of blue, the super subtle yet beautiful stippling mist you've got going on in the background.

It does seem to blend. :/ But it's not the detail that makes the segments merge, rather, it's the values. Its hard to keep in mind a light source and how the other parts affect the light. Then there's the problem that I only have a black and white medium to work with. The usual way to differentiate, would be to differentiate between the parts with variations of colour. But I can't do that because it's just black and white. I need to figure out the best way to use the values to my advantage to keep from muddling things in the future.

Mewitti In reply to PhantomSeptember [2013-03-17 17:24:29 +0000 UTC]

That's very true, the merging is from similar value and not technically from detail... I only said it was detail because when I, personally, try to add fine detail to things, I often can't accurately control how all that detail affects the way the overall value turns out. I dunno if you have the same problem.

I wish you luck in taming the black-and-white medium. You do amazing work.

I usually throw detail out the window if the values start getting too dark. The snail picture I did recently would be a good example. I love detail though. Getting the values right with ink is almost like trying to draw a complex checkerboard-- black needing always to be next to white, and white next to black without any mistakes.

One day I'll get it right. Good luck with your detailing too-- even though I think your art is perfect already. *_* Man, just looked at your gallery. Beautiful stuff.

I would say that the tiny details add a ton to the overall quality of the bigger picture. This is a wonderful picture and I think it showcases what you do best. Nice!

The amount of scales on this dragon is staggering! Very nicely done. I like the flowing of the beard with the pointy snouth. I think the blue coloring is a great touch that makes it stand out.

I like drawing scales. Sometimes I wonder if it's too much extraneous detail though.

I personally love this love of detailing. I mean, a lot of times it could run the risk of being busy-looking and would lose the focus of the illustration, but I think you hit a good balance. I mean, I think it's having the scales looking individual pieces that make it look different than scales that just look like a texture.

Thanks! I thought the composition seemed to be missing some little something, so I drew little blue mushrooms.
