Description Haha why are you under here too? You're not getting wet cuz you're a ghost!
....Why does it matter?
-----------------------------------------------

It started off as a little "color blush" portrait practice with Nij, but I was procrastinating from schoolwork and I added yaz... then I wanted leaves and to use a rain brush. So yeah.
I also wanted to emphasize the fact Yaz has a broken tooth. When it's simplified no one can tell.

I actually really enjoy when the artwork just kinda happens without a plan. Cool stuff comes out of it. Like that rainy city thing I did on livestream that one time.
Speaking of which, I'm livestreaming right now.

I really love your characters' expressions The use of colour and texture is very effective, especially on their skin.

Expressions are so fun! If only I could master the squashing and stretching with my cartoon style! : O
Thanks! That was the real focus of their portraits.

I'm still learning to draw convincing expressions - it's proving tricky since my style has changed quite a bit recently. The result is a folder full of dozens of sketches of my characters pulling the most ridiculous faces

Ah that sounds like so much fun! xD
Personally I started a character expression meme but I haven't completed it yet.
Still it was fun to draw sheep!Yaz look all angry. I don't see that facial expression on him too often.

Yee ; u ;

Yeah I primarily use photoshop!
Sometimes I use Flash/ After effects for Animation
And Illustrator for Vectors.
Also when I want to do smooth lineart I use Fire Alpaca.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Dristany In reply to Pheoniic [2014-06-05 22:11:20 +0000 UTC]

ooooooooh I've never used fire alpaca
I'm still using SAI caaaause I'm 'po ^ ^;
So you ever do streams or videos? I would enjoy watching you work <3333

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pheoniic In reply to Dristany [2014-06-05 23:20:34 +0000 UTC]

Well technically Fire Alpaca is a step down from Sai.
It's a free software that I use for smoothing my lineart because Photoshop doesn't have that.
(Also I have a mac so I miss out on the cool PC plugins)

Yes occasionally I do. Unfortunately my computer can't handle high quality streams.
But I did stream that realistic nova and lots of people came. It was fun.

I do have a youtube with some timelapse videos and animations!

Oh my such beauty!

The Good: I think it's safe to say you've impressed me highly. Not only with this piece but your entire gallery in general. Your understanding of color is astonishing. This piece is so full of life even in such dreary weather. The rendering from their hair just proves how wet they really are. Their faces are so expressive and well illustrated I can really see the difference in characters simply through their expressions alone. The composition is simple yet it works! The leaves break apart everything just right!

The Bad: Honestly just little nit pick things. There seems to be a little too much grey surrounding Nij. It's a little jarring and breaks her apart from Yaz a little too much. Especially considering how you did this, they would both be on the same layer. (in this case it's the mid ground) followed by the leaves in the foreground. If anything more gray should be added to the background leaves. Last thing! perhaps up the contrast on them a teeny bit to help bring them out there's a lot of midtones and it needs a couple more darks.

Overall this is an astonishing piece and I look forward to see what you have next!

Pheoniic In reply to Antonus [2014-05-22 16:12:45 +0000 UTC]

Aw thank you!

Oh gosh yes. That part about the grey is a very good point! I may have gone a little crazy with that grey mist if it makes it hard to tell where the characters are standing in space.
Additionally a thing I really could have conveyed better is the fact Nij is actually a ghost. It's so hard to make her see through... and still make her look appealing.

It's interesting you bring up contrast here haha. I usually pump a good amount of contrast and saturation into my works. So this one was an attempt to resist that urge and go for lower contrast and less saturation. But I agree there's a bit more depth I could have conveyed here. o 7 o I have yet to grasp the low contrast ways.

Thank you for the critique!

Yess Yaz's beautifully flawed teeth.
I like how their facial structures are very similar... because they're supposed to look kind of like each other.
Thank you!Β

anqila [2014-05-07 07:21:37 +0000 UTC]

I love how much the characters' personalities comes through in this piece. And the atmosphere! And Nij's purple-blue shadows! And your painting style, cartoony but with realistic lighting? yes please. There's just so much to love about this piece, wow. And to think it was unplanned.

What exactly do you mean by a color blush portrait?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pheoniic In reply to anqila [2014-05-09 17:30:40 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I'm glad I was able to achieve that!

Haha. Yes! It was also a way for me to apply some things I wanted to use in drawings. (Like I see great artworks with plant leaves in the foreground and I put it into a mental cabinet labeled "For future drawings")

Oh! If you've seen the skin coloring tutorials here on dA, they always have the midtones, the highlights, shadows and the blush pallete colors.
When I said that I meant portraits that focus on the blush aspect of the face much like how polararts.tumblr.com/ does it.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

anqila In reply to Pheoniic [2014-05-11 08:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Ah, I think I get what you're saying. I rarely use pre-made skin palettes because I'm afraid I might end up using them as a crutch, and skintones just seem so highly dependent on the lighting situation.Β I guess the results end up being more saturated and colorful when you concentrate on the blush?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Pheoniic In reply to anqila [2014-05-11 15:17:33 +0000 UTC]

Yes! I ended up toning the saturation down at the end-
But it was quite vibrant before that.

Yes his wet sheepy fluff spike.
I really wanted to make nij more ghostly by making her see through... but that really took away from the detail I put in her face. x,D
Just another one of those things that are better in theory than actuality

Her backstory is so intertwined with the plot that it hasn't been released yet.Β
So consider her still under development.
(However if you search around you will find cute pictures of her as a kid with Kaisae as her adopted father)

It's really different from my usual because of how 1. Low Contrast and 2. Less saturated it is.
I need to experiment more with that contrast thing.

I love the texture here! The depth it gives looks positively beautiful. I also like how Nij's skin is visibly purpler than Yaz's; it reminds me of her ghostliness.

Her eyes look somewhat Asian. Is that intentional?

Pheoniic In reply to MissLunaRose [2014-05-04 16:51:48 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I wanted to use that rain brush as soon as I found it!
...Makes me wish I had it for that rainy city drawing earlier.

Yes- I wanted to make a little contrast between them with colors. (Because the structure of their faces are quite similar)
Mmm no. This is the same problem I had with the Realistic Nij. My desire to give her angular eyes always seems to do that. :V

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

MissLunaRose In reply to Pheoniic [2014-05-06 17:12:44 +0000 UTC]

Neat! Do you remember where you found the brush?

The different skin tones work nicely.

Part of the resemblance might be in the way the top outer eyelid folds over the bottom one. I think some of it also lies in how her two eyes form a slight V shape. Of course, I haven't poured a ton of time into facial diversity studies yet, so I can't be sure. Perhaps playing around with those two things will help?Β  Β
