Description My Zerg concept [link]

So I had this idea for a new mechanic in StarCraft 2 where units can get pushed in directions. More specifically, ground light units get pushed back the most, while medium sized get pushed back less and massive even less. At first I thought it was just another version of the Sentry's ability of force field, but after thinking about it more, I think it could have very different, fun and high level micro play applied to it. So I gave this ability to this new unit I call the Vanquisher. This would be a higher tier unit, that has to use energy to use the ability. Now as far as what you could do with the ability; for one, retreating from battles would be one way to use it, by pushing the enemy's army back. Another way is if you lined up two Vanquishers, one on each side of a group of enemies, the shock waves could be fired at each Vanquisher, sandwiching the enemies together causing great amounts of damage. The ability could also compliment sentry play, if a wall is created with force fields, the Vanquisher could then shoot a shock wave and instead of the enemies getting pushed back out of range, they hit the wall so your forces can get safe projectile attacks off.

Tell me what you think, or if you have any other ideas how this mechanic could be used. : )

Hmmm.....Β  I suppose another way to use this mechanic would be with terrain; simply shove enemies off a cliff.Β  Another way could be to set up a trap with artillery or mines, but those are more Terran technologies than Protoss; still, useful for team matches.

This could be a really cool unit. Β I could see it in a post colossus protoss too which is what I think a lot of people are looking for. Β Have a few of these flank in to bunch up some bio and then drop storms on it. Β It would be devastating.

Hmm.... here's a thought for a Protoss unit. Imagine something that has damaging force field on the front, thrusters on the back, and built behind/within the forcefield array are devices meant to suck in enemies as it battering rams/shocks forward.

nice concept idea ^^

I could definitely see the application of this mech. I feel like there is a hero with the power to push enemies away.
I can see this unit being used in small numbers to keep zerglings, zealots and roaches back away from the main army, and be great when combined with the Colossus and immortals. I do think it should have little to no push-back on massive units, and only deal damage to them. Aircraft would be a hard counter to the unit, so you would need to provide it cover with Phoenixes. If the attack is infrequent enough and only fired from the front, then it would still be vulnerable to swarms in the open.

However, I can agree that spammers would use it to troll melee centric armies. To counter such trolling, I'd give it a hefty price tag and put it as a late game unit, like the colossus it would pair with so well.

As a Concept, I have to wonder why the Protoss wouldn't have this design, as it is such an effective counter to their nemesis, the Zerg.

I'd make it have an attack with a bit of knockback and an ability with cooldown and energy that lasts about 20 secs and turns its weapon into one of 2 other modes: push in all directions (not including air units, but it includes your own) or an ability-based one that shoots in a direction and causes heavy knockback to all ground and air units.

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure how sending units in all directions would be useful though.

Drop it in the mineral line and start firing, stopping the workers from harvesting/returning resources. Also, drop it in the middle of an army, and start firing, keeping short-raged nonmassive units at bay.

Also, what if it has to root like a spine crawler or siege tank does?

Thank you. I think the siege tank should feel unique in having a stationary mode, while the spine crawler is a building, so it's kinda different.Β

Xhydralisk In reply to Phill-Art [2012-10-12 01:36:05 +0000 UTC]

A Zergling and Roach assault force would be reduced to little more than an annoyance as they'd never be in range to deliver any damage. I can easily see a spammer using these to push units into a corner, rendering them useless. Zerg already have trouble with pathfinding, especially with their Ultralisks already clogging up the lines, and if this ability works on entrenched units like siege tanks or crawlers, static defenses are also moot. In all, I think this is buggy as hell.

It's no wonder, really. You probably would've found a way to make the carrier work, and Browder obviously wants to replace it with his baby (the tempest) one way or another. His plan got foiled in the WoL beta, but he will be denied no longer. Dammit!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Phill-Art In reply to AllyDea [2012-06-22 19:09:20 +0000 UTC]

Only thing they would need to fix about the carrier is make it so it could be microed like the carrier in BroodWar. In BW it could attack with its interceptors while distancing itself away from the target.

Although people are ragging on the tempest a bit, I like the unit. It looks cool and it's attack is visually interesting. While it's micro is no where near as engaging as carriers from BW, I still think it has interesting mirco, even a better than the carrier in WoL imo. For one, it's range is awkwardly long, so you would always need to compliment it with Oracles and Observers for vision so you can put pressure on the enemy. Plus keeping it at max range during battles could be interesting, especially out of range of those nasty Vipers.
