They are very hard to get and even harder to get tame ones. Usually they will tear you apart! It is very rare to come across ones that are as friendly as these ones. I had originally purchased them as a breeding colony for snake food. but they were just so damn cute and friendly! So they became pets.

They are not very domesticated for the most part. If the parents are mean the young will have that same wild streak. You need to find some that come from tame parents for the best luck. They are cute!!

Those ears, those eyes....
How is his temperment? Nice and friendly like regular fancy rats?

I know right? So cute! They are not as good as fancy rats. They have the temperment of a friendly gerbil. They don't want to hang around you like a rat will, but they don't try to constantly escape the way a mouse does. Some of them can be very aggressive (like hamsters, some are great some are evil). Mine are very mellow and let me pick them up no problems and take food from my hand.

Looks kind of like a black/roof rat. I did some research on them and they originate from the Natal province... that's in my country o.o

Yeah, I'm guessing they would be, but still, would be nice to see the domesticated version in the pet trade <3

They are only just now starting to become truly domesticated, if you don't breed careful they will eat your eyeballs.

Well the wild ones are mean to the core and will jump into the air to bite you if you get near their babies. It's taken years of selective breeding in the States to get them hand tame, and they go wild again when they breed.

The ears rock! I got these from a women who got them from a breeder in IL. They are really hard to find, I don't think pet stores ever carry them.

I know none of the pet stores around here do... I should look online for a breeder when I have room for a new rattie or two. Do they do well with 'normal' rats? (as in the typical 'Norway rats'?)

Phoenix-Cry In reply to Drakmanka [2011-06-08 20:24:04 +0000 UTC]
No, you can't put them with norway rats, they are very agressive about 'the colony'. you can't even mix in new african soft furs in. They are more like a gerbil than a rat.

Huh. So even if you get them as a baby at the same time so there is no territorial stuff going on?

Phoenix-Cry In reply to Drakmanka [2011-06-09 00:05:42 +0000 UTC]
They have to be weanlings and you can only have one male for ever four females or they get nippy with each other.

they have been fun to watch, they are very active. Kinda like a gerbil in personality. Not as friendly as a norway rat.
