I love this, Beauty's face almost looks like carved marble....

Oh, my, it's so beautiful... I love the discreet sepia tone, the way the poses are different but there's symmetry in their holding on to the roses; and the way their heads are turned away from each other, emphasising the conflict for the moment... Wow. And gorgeous shading at that.

I really do love fairytales - it's amazing how many people here seem to.
As far as the Beast is concerned, I modeled him off of my cat, then gave him slightly more lion-like features (such as smaller eyes, a sort of mane, comparitively longer snout). The tusks, I dunno, just seemed to fit. So perhaps if you want to something less human, it might help to start from an animal base, rather than a man. But that's just an idea.
Thank you for your lovely comment!

This is so pretty... I really love your version of Beauty (or Belle as I prefer. Well it means the same thing, just in french). And the beast is really great too ^^ Reminds me a bit of Sarah and Vincent too.

Heh. I've never seen any of that series, but you're right, there is some similarity. I didn't notice it until after I'd done my first B&B picture, though. Sub-conscious influence? The pictures of Sara and Vincent that I can find do look kinda familiar to me.
Anyway, thanks for your comment!

Have you seen that old black and white French movie version? i forget the director's name, but there's a prince character as well, who is arrogant and all that jazz, but he gets killed trying to storm the Beast's castle. In the end, when the Beast transforms, he looks like the dead prince. I think it's very sad.
i like how they look so awkward together in this picture.

No, sadly, the only movie version I've seen is Disneys, which I liked despite myself (I'd like to hate them for what they did to the story, but the movie was so good!). I'm trying, in a vague sort of way, to get my hands on Jean Cocteau's version, but I couldn't tell you if that's the one you described, since I haven't seen it.
I'm really glad that the awkwardness came across - that was really the entire point of the picture. Neither of them knows quite what to do or say, so they end up with a hugely awkward silence every night. Or so I imagine, anyway.

Cocteau! That was it. I got mine from amazon.com, so at least it's readily available.

Yes - it's a lucky thing, that. I've heard some pretty good things about it. And actually, I think I can get it out of the library, if I put it on hold. I just haven't gotten around to it yet.
I take it you enjoyed it?

Very much. There are parts that are campy, of course, but there are some really interesting design elements (like hands holding torches along the walls in the Beast's castle), and the story is more poignant.

Thanks. Me too, actually. It's always a bit disappointing when he gets turned into a prince.
