Giggling 4evah at how I had pencilled this page with James being all 'nope' to the idea of getting a magical makeover, and just then in Roommates *AsheRhyder showed us his fabulous Goblin King style....
(And I am kinda following hir lead re: Javert and Valjean's sort-of, demi relationship.)

L'Entente Cordiale is the name given to the diplomatic agreements turned informal military alliance that started up between France and the UK in the early 1900s, which was quite a game-changer in European diplomacy since until then, well, the Hundred Year's War and Napoleon and all that jazz, and mucho historic Anglo-French antagonism. It was touch and go for a while, especially after French and British colonial forces had a major skirmish in Fashoda (Sudan) (which is what happens when one colonizing country tries to secure a thoroughfare across the continent South to North and the other goes West to East...) and nearly went to war and a large part of the French political class would've preferred to make good with the Prussians (which made the British v. nervous), and goodness if that wouldn't've changed things like WWI. But a few canny diplomats and Edward VII's sunny personality when he visited Paris managed to sway French public opinion towards anglophilia to a rather surprising amount, and they worked out a gentlemanly agreement to carry on divvying up and exploiting Africa without stepping on one another's toes.
(On a lighter note, during his visit Edward caused a rather intriguing contraption to be custom-built for him in a swanky Parisian brothel and it was named after him - go on, that's what Google is for.)

So, no Javert and Valjean at the ball. And that's starting to be just about enough build-up and groundwork, eh? Also, yes, I am back to posting almost regularly I guess. Yay! Louisa's busy though, so usual caveats for the coloured pages...
