Description So, here's part of a project I've been working on for local press project in the past coupla months; a summary of the events behind the Fête des Lumières, the December 8th festival of lights and thanksgiving to the Virgin Mary, in my current city of residence Lyon. Lyon is one of several French cities with a specifically Marian tradition, going back to the very early Christians.

French only for now, mes amis, I'll try and bash a translation together over the holidays maybe - but Imma relinking the wikipedia article so you can get the general gist of goings-on depicted here:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Festival…

Happy night of shiny lights and mulled wine to you all.

I'm ashamed to admit that I'd never actually heard of this festival...
Judging by the condition of the citizens holding him, St Pothin put up a good deal of resistance! (Or are they fellow-prisoners?)

Did the vow of 1643 actually affect the plague outbreak at all? Or does history not record the outcome?

The actual statue is the thing on top of the bell-tower, yes?

partisans de Marie et Marianne -- very neat! (But.. only one person was hurt: une victime?)

I love the little cartoon of the priest and the politician mentally bad-mouthing each other with the utmost external politeness

Crowd scenes: so many little individuals!

Fellow prisoners - the Martyrs of Lyon were a sizeable bunch of early Christians put to death, incl. Ste Blandine stealth-featured here with the lion - wiki might fill you in on that reference.

The plague did in fact mostly spare Lyon! Then when they were in the same situation viz cholera a few centuries later it kinda prodded them to stop stiffing on the promised statue....

according to my writer's research, though there were nation-wide violent protests at the secular laws, she stands by a sole deadly incident in Lyon.

(so many crowds, and so many buildings, in drawing this issue....)

Ah yes, I noticed the friendly lion -- didn't realise it was an identifying symbol of a saint! (Is there a proper term for things like Luke's ox?)

[Edit: Wikipedia says 'iconographie']

It's the instrument-of-martyrdom thing that is frequently an identifier, which I believe is a slightly different theological matter than the purely symbolic animals of the Evangelists....

Finally, I actually get to use this phrase as an adult!

(Please excuse the lack of accented characters. I haven't the faintest which to use!)

Je ne parle pas francais.

A few years back, my wife and I saw the Jazz a Vienne with Sting!
That was an incredible day and night.
What an amazing amphitheater beneath the ancient temple.

Really Rusty so forgive my inaccuracies. '

P1. Spring 177 In lyon the devotion made to Mary goes back to the first christians of the city

'to death!" "To the lions!" ""In Prison!"

P2. Despite the expeditious end of the Christian martyrs, the Marian line opened by Pothin continues today

"Pothin first bishop of the Christians of Lugdunum, deny thy faith!" "For Mary mother of Christ Jesus!" "The Irons!" "To the Lions!"

P3. St. Irene came from the east succeeding St. Pothin, he wrote c. 1180 against heresies a treaty which clarifies and organizes the dogma of the Catholic religion and recalls the role of Mary.

P4. In 1168, a chapel dedicated to the virgin would have been built on the ancient foundation of trajan, which gives its name to the hill of fourviere which was built on the foundation of a temple of Venus or perhaps Isis

"No arms, or temple" "Boar!"

P5 On March 12, 1643, the (?) of lyon were gathered around their prelate alexander of Mascrany, in the hotel of the crown which served as a town house

"Good then, what do we do?" "We pray"

P6 The plague has long been experienced in Lyon. Once again she entered France. Powerless, the mayor and his deputies of the time rely on Mary

"And if...And if we all, and after us, all the future elders, make a vow to Mary?" "We will offer her a statue and candles, and torches and gold"

P7 We, on the 8th of September, the day of the nativity of the virgin, without extravagant dress, but in ordinary dress, in the chapel fourviere, to attend the Mass, we will make prayers and devotions to the said Virgin

P8 And offer hER, in the form of homage and gratitude, the quantity of seven pounds of white wax in candles, and torches and a golden shield in the shape of the sun, of this we will dispose it to her to receive in her special protection the city of Lyons

"And the statue?""Not the enough money they say!"

P9 September 8 1852  few years earlier Lyon has been spared by the cholera, and the citizens finally unite the funds and offer the statue promised in 1643

"The statue will not arrive today the builder has been slow because of the flood of the river Soane"

P10 Postponed to December 8 of the same year, the inauguration of the monumental statue of Mary by Joseph Hugues fabisch is still held back by the bad weather

It is not possible God! I'll never get to celebrate Mary! ... and the Lyonnais did not move, preferring to stay well at home "Do not swear Monsieur Fabisch"

P11 On the evening of December 8, 1852, it became time

"Finally a sign from heaven!"

P12 In order to express their joy to see the virgin gilded and brought to lyon, the inhabitants lit candles at their windows

P13 In his letter dated April 28, 1900, Pope Leon xiii recognizes the special connection between lyon and Mary "Lugdunum suum" (?) He is also known for the social orientation he gives to the people "Reconcile the praying hill and the hill that works" "The relations between employers and workers have changed, wealth has flowed into the hands of a few, and the multitude has been left in need"

P14 December 8 1903 On its side france discusses the separation of the church and the state, which feeds the clashes of the partisans of marianne (translation note: the Marianne is a name for the french socialist party) and Catholic's dedicated to Mary in the streets of lyon, people are hurt.

P15 Under the long governance of Edourd Herriot, a truce between marianne and mary devotees settles over the years, in 1954, the same Marian congress reaffirms the link between marie and lyon. On this occasion, Herriot receives the Cardinal Gerlier at the town hall.

Left side:

"superstitious" "Come children of the fatherland, the day of glory is come to you hear in our countryside .."

Center:

"We are marching towards the victory of moderation"

Right:

"free thinker" Resplendent our Queen, all beautiful, without defect In the night and in sorrow, be the hope of the new times ...

P16 At the beginning of the twentieth century, when religion frequently returned to the public state, on 8 December, the Lyonnais no longer questioned the place of marianne and that of mary. Now they light their lights for a popular and free festival

P17 The festival of lights has more than 3 million visitors distributed over 4 days at least 500 cars are tour operators, with a 40% annual turnover of street vendors ... 6.5 million passengers on public transport in Lyon, a hotel occupancy rate of 83% And a turnover multiplied by 4 for the bars and restaurants of the city, which offer 2 or 3 services per evening (Figures edition pete of lights 2013)

"There are fun even when ..."

Bless you! thanks for that considerable effort!
Coupla corrections maybe:
For Mary mother of Christ Jesus! > no, that last word there is "jamais", never - he refuses to abjure his Christian faith.
*A temple is believed to have been built..
*No arms, no temple. / you boors!
p 5* So, what shall we do?
p10 *[equivalent] This is a goddamned nightmare!
Marianne is the allegorical figure/anthropomorphic personification of the French republic, not specific to the socialists.
*Léon XIII was know for the social-minded bent of his tenure/papacy
*500 tour operator buses/coaches, and 40% of the annual revenue for street vendors
and the last comment is a grousing that restaurants are indulging/raking it in tonight.

But thanks again, this will save me a lot of time if I make an English edit!

I can't wait for the English description Pika, even if I could parse out most of the French about being devoted to the cult of the Virgin and a cholera outbreak in the 1850s.

I had six years of it in school, and what I don't remember from the conjugations and vocabulary I learned, I can parse out thanks to context.  And of course, I can read and copy French passages near perfectly.
