Description
This is a character design for a potential game or webcomic that I planned a while ago.It's called "Halcyon Dreams", and she's the main protagonist. Her name is Marissa.
She originally lives in the 'real world', but finds herself being dragged through a portal into a strange alien world one day. Once there, she finds that she is able to cast magic and transform into an animal at will. And stuff.
Then of course the plot is partly driven by her desire to get home. Probably.
As an image, I'm not satisfied with this... As is often the case, I see nothing but flaws when I look at it. However, if I do make a webcomic based on this idea, I'm really hoping that my people drawing skills will improve as I go along!
I am pleased though by the fact that I didn't use references or anything for this, so my learning-how-to-draw-people is sinking in at least somewhat!
Since she's meant to be from the 'real world' (whatever that is), she's meant to look sort of plain rather than having some ostentatious fantasy design... so I ended up almost using the same face that I draw all the time for her. Maybe one of these days I'll learn how to draw more varied faces and expressions!1 o_O
Her outfit though is from the world she arrives in; she'd probably be in jeans and a T-shirt at the start of the story.
I may try to work on a distinct face that I can give her and draw consistently later on...

I like the character, the overall design kind of reminds me about Marisa Kirisame from the Touhou without her witch outfit (even her name matches).

This sounds amazing. I love the concept, particularly since it invokes a sense of escapism that's so crucial to good stories.
As the image goes, I really love the way the wisp of magic emanates from Marissa's fingers. The appearance is friendly and attractive, so I'd immediately be able to follow her as a protagonist and empathise with her. The outfit looks very alien - it's intriguing and yet suggestive without being overdone, which adds to the appeal.

I wonder where you got the name Halcyon from, it's apparently a type of bird! Hmm, also the first female main protagonist, interesting, yes. o.o
She seems really watery! I mean, there's the bue, the magical bubbles of doom, the 'wavy' clothing [Are those skin-coloured spots part of the shirt or just her skin? Just to be sure. o.o]... Is the name Marissa derived from mare, maybe?
Makes me curious what the alien world will be like... Will there be Astrostles aliens? Humans? Will they be sexy? I sure hope so, mrrow.
I also think it's impressive, considering you did it using no reference! I wonder what you have in mind to make her more distinct as you mentioned.
Anyway, I guess you'll see whether you'll make a game or webcomic out of it. I'd see a webcomic indeed being an interesting idea, and maybe a way to continuously be able to churn out new content!

Oh, and they are basically rectangular holes in her sleeve, showing her skin, rather than skin-coloured patterns! It's a design I've seen on real dresses before. Like this! [link]

Halcyon is a name for kingfisher birds, but it also means things like calm, serene, peaceful, etc; 'halcyon days' is a phrase that generally refers to pleasantly peaceful days of the past.
"Halcyon Dreams" as the title has several meanings that would be revealed in time!
She is very Water elemental, and that's a plot point; all the characters are divided into Water, Fire, Earth and Air castes or tribes, and the Water ones are the rarest, so she becomes quite special because of that.
I looked up something like 'female sea names' or 'female water names' or things like that and got 'Marissa' amongst them, which might be related to 'marine' or things like that! Or if it doesn't etymologically come from it, it seems at least similar enough to have that meaning. Or something.
The world will be boringly inhabited by basic humans, because they originally came from the 'real world' long ago!
