Sycorax is a character that is mentioned in William Shakespeare’s The Tempest. She is the deceased mother of the beast Caliban, she washed up on the shores of the island after having been exiled from her native Algiers. She traps the spirit Ariel in a tree. Prospero speaks very ill of her even though they never met. She was long dead before he ever came to the island. His prejudice may have been influenced by Ariel, whom I am sure had his reasons for despising her. Of course Ariel was also enslaved so Prospero, so there you go. Even so, I find the blue-eyed witch of Algiers to be one of the most fascinating unseen characters in Shakespeare’s plays.
