Man, I just about had a heart attack when I read Smaragd might be broken. XD Not that I use it often, but I often use it as an argument for GNOME people to realize they can use their existing themes in KDE.

Lol, yeah. I really like GNOME 3 (and the shell, although you obviously don't need to use it to use GNOME 3), but I acknowledge all of its shortcomings as well. It's not really one for customization yet. If people do customize it a lot, I think it'd make sense to include an interface similar to KDE for getting themes/plugins/extensions/etc. through gnome-look.org. I mean, KDE's had it for so long, the GNOME-side needs to show it understands the quality of convenience. (or should I say kwality of konvenience? OHO! *shot*)
I do think that the shell, just like plasma, has a lot of exciting prospects so far as extensibility goes.
Oh, for the type of desktop KDE is, it's perfect. Whereas other desktops always seem like they have obvious holes in functionality or convenience, in KDE I'm SURPRISED every time they make it better. We really are fortunate to have such immense possibilities before us.

Getting themes/plugins/extensions/etc from gnome-look is a good idea, especially for new users. I think gnome 3 is nice, but was released too soon.

Yeah- they really should've added anti-aliasing to the window borders and made the idle windows not have that hard edge between the title bar and the menu bar. There are one or two things that aren't working exceptionally well with the messaging notification, but they've been fixed for 3.2 mostly, already.
Other than that, I think it was ready- they'd been putting it off for like, three years XD. There's no way you can have boot loads of customization before anyone has the chance to use your software and want to make customizations for it. KDE 4 suffered from similar problems when it was released.
Unless a new user loves GNOME 3 the way it is, I'll usually recommend KDE 4 since it's so flexible and polished.

You're welcome.
It's beta 1, but yeah, of course, the most important and noticeable improvements are in Kwin and Activities.
