Description Because it needed to be done!

Not that you can really see from the pictures, but... oooh he's so shiny! He's actually kind of irridescent because of some special pigment I used. yeeeeeeeey.

7 inches high, sculpey with acrylic paint.

I come back and visit this piece on occasion...i just love it. he really did just come out stunning...I almost wanna cry about how big a pain in the a** he'd be to cast....He'd sell. You'd have to do resin or bronze though. expensive expensive.

i decided to teach myself to sculpt and just started last night for the first time ever and i really enjoy it so far. The intricate detail you put into this must have been time consuming but so worth it! Your finished product is amazing!

I love how his neck is twisted so convincingly, and those long horny scales at the back of his head accentuate that beautifully. Nice job!

*random stranger, throwing in my 2 bits*

This is an awesome dragon bust; I really love it. I agree with nemo-h about the base though; it is distracting, being stark white. Your eyes follow the beautiful curve of the neck down to... Intrusive White Base. I'd paint it dark blue to blend with the dragon's colors, or better yet..

For future busts, you might play with incorporating the dragon's shoulders/breast as the base itself. Then it'll be seamless.

That aside, the details on this guy are wonderful! I'm having fun poking around your gallery.

It's glorious! Now that's what I call a dragon. REALLY good job, honestly. I've only one gripe with it... and It's that the base is a little bit too rough in sculpting, and that plain white only looks ugly compared to the awesome sculpt and paintjob over it. Otherwise, plain perfect!

rah-bop In reply to nemo-h [2008-10-13 22:20:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for such honest criticism! You're right, the base is really awful! I need to find an effective way of making smooth surfaces. In this case I tried carving the base after it had been baked to create an interesting texture, but if it looks ugly then it just means I didn't succeed.

I make my bases white because I don't want them to draw attention away from the sculpture itself. What color do you think would be better?

nemo-h In reply to rah-bop [2008-10-13 22:31:35 +0000 UTC]

Even black would be better. why not try a soft gradient? or just polish it up a bit. It's just that it's such a beautiful sculpture that it's almost a sin to not spend some time on the base. It's like choosing to make a beautiful drawing on ugly notepaper instead of a good blank sheet. The drawing is still beautiful but...

Do you have a Dremel? the soft bits are good for smoothing sculpey surfaces.

rah-bop In reply to nemo-h [2008-10-14 03:46:41 +0000 UTC]

Really? Black? I paint them white assuming that they will blend in better with white shelves... but this could just be because I have a lot of white shelves in my house. I will put some thought into black or graduated colors. Thank you so much for the input.

I will also work on getting my hands on a dremel. Thanks!

I used super sculpey, liquitex acrylics and a little PearlEx pearlescent pigments for shininess. I just used the cheapest brushes I could find. ;D

You have to mix it with some other kind of vehicle because it won't stick by itself. I like to mix it with clear varnish, but I've also had success mixing it with gel medium and paint. You could probably do just fine mixing it with watered-down elmer's glue.

What did you use for an armatures?
If wire, what kind? (is considering do try and make his own clay sculptures)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rah-bop In reply to Garm-r [2007-12-22 15:24:42 +0000 UTC]

For the armature I used 18-gauge steel wire and aluminum foil. When you're doing sculpey stuff, you have a lot of liberty when it comes to your armature. You can use just about any kind of wire that's strong enough to keep shape, whether it's steel or aluminum or copper or what. You can also use other things like thread or masking tape, too. I haven't tried it, but theoretically it won't burn since it's wrapped in sculpey.
