Description Commission for *sonitweek . About 7" to the top of the horns (8" to the top of the crest,) 6.5 from nose- to ear-tip, and 3.5" wide. Made primarily of super sculpey, but the crest spines and "ears" are made of Kneadatite Blue/Yellow (aka "green stuff") sculpting epoxy. I'm not used to working with it. It's like sculpting with chewing gum. This character's spinal crest and everything are somewhat transparent, so I made the sails out of clear acetate so it's see-through (the paint is so shiny, however, that it makes photographing that effect a little challenging.) Actually, per usual, the photos do it absolutely no justice whatsoever. This thing is so shimmery it looks like I painted it with cosmetics. I might try and retake these photos later, if the sun ever comes out enough to give me some sexy natural light to use.

This is gorgeous~
Um, can I ask what type of wire you used for the base? I'm about to begin working with Super Sculpey for the first time and I have no idea what wire to use

Just about any kind will work, really! Sculpey is very benign and you cook it at a low temperature, so anything that holds its shape and doesn't spontaneously burst into flames or emit fumes when heated (like some plastics) will work as an armature. For most of my sculptures I used some cheap steel wire I found at the hardware store (just because it was cheap!) but I've also used aluminum wire and coathangers and stuff in a pinch.

Good luck with your sculptures!

very nice! Is Kneadatite flexible when its cured? I'd like to find a sculping material thats ends up somewhat rubbery for those fine parts like your spines. Otherwise I'd be so worried about them breaking.

It's very flexible and plastic-y, and even a little stretchy too. Check it out: [link] I've been using Kneadatite for thin, otherwise easily-breakable areas and it works well.

do you do the scale detail one by one or do you have a sort of stamp? Details like that make me crazy!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rah-bop In reply to Tiaekyco [2007-12-04 19:03:13 +0000 UTC]

To make the scales, I cut a little wedge-shaped tool out of a piece of plastic I found in the recycle bin. I cut it into the shape of the negative space between two scales, roughly 'w' shaped. I pressed the pointed tip into the clay and the scale shapes emerged from between the marks. After I finished the scales I brushed them with turpenoid to soften them a bit.

Epoxy you said? But not really 'normal' Epoxy as know in 'model making' (for planes etc ) or?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rah-bop In reply to Akulatraxas [2007-12-01 17:53:25 +0000 UTC]

The kind of epoxy I used is specifically for sculpting. I know it's really popular among people who do miniatures, like Warhammer.

What a great bust! You should try fantasy film. It is heat fusible and comes in many iridescent colors. I used it on the wings of my Baby Autumn Dragon sculpture. I will be using it on my Winter Dragon sculpture as well. check out this supplier:

I think you could benefit from this web supplier. I sure do! The service is excellent and very prompt in shipments. I work on a larger scale than you, but I learn something new each time I use polymer clay media.

Holy crap, that's amazing! How do you do the scales? Are they laid individually (which is how it looks), and how do you get the antiquing effect around their edges like that? It's gorgeous and those crests are just !

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rah-bop In reply to RedDrgn [2007-11-30 23:52:36 +0000 UTC]

To make the scales, I cut a little wedge-shaped tool out of a piece of plastic I found in the recycle bin. I cut it into the shape of the negative space between two scales, roughly 'w' shaped. I pressed the pointed tip into the clay and the scale shapes emerged from between the marks. ...does that make sense? >>; If not I can draw a diagram. Anyway, after I finished the scales I brushed them with turpenoid to soften them a bit.

For the antiquing effect, I covered everything with a transparent varnish to protect my paint and then (when it was dry, of course) I gently worked acrylics thinned with water into all the cracks and indents. Before it had a chance to dry, I wiped it back off with a dampened paper towel. The darker paint stayed in all the cracks. :3
