Description

watercolor, ink — six individual 2.5” x 3” watercolor paintings (two danios each) assembled into one image post-scan.

The common names of these fish are (top to bottom, left to right): Zebra danio, Meghalaya danio, spotted danio, gold-ring danio, celestial pearl danio, emerald dwarf rasbora, glowlight danio, moustached danio, rosy danio, pearl danio, blue danio, and yoma danio. I tried to paint them to be life-sized when possible (Danio dangila gets 6” long! Had to shrink it to fit the frame I put these paintings in.) The smallest one in my painting is Danio erythromicron, which is 0.75” long.

Would you ever consider doing commissions and how much would they be?
Perhaps something with cardinal tetras and phantom tetras and such

Right now I'm not taking any commissions because I just don't have the time. Sorry.

I have already done a cardinal tetra, though!: www.redbubble.com/people/rah-b…

Yes I absolutely adore them, too. Unfortunately I didn't manage to bring up the fry :/ I tried two times but they refused all sorts of food and then died after a few days. Not as easy as most other danios ^^

I once had a lone female celestial pearl danio, a pity purchase from the LFS because she was literally the only CPD left in a big tank, and she seemed stressed out all by herself. I mixed her in with my Endler's but she seemed to prefer lurking in the back behind the plants.

That's my CPD story.

How common is Danio erythromicron? Don't think I've ever seen one for sale before.

Nice family portrait of the danios!

rah-bop In reply to bonefish [2014-06-25 03:57:43 +0000 UTC]

I've heard CPDs hide a lot even with a group and really good tank conditions. Apparently sometimes they're just really shy?

I'm not sure how common D. erythromicron is, though I've seen it for sale locally from time to time. It's listed as endangered so hopefully the ones I've seen have been locally bred -- pretty likely considering how robust the local aquarium community is. Some of the members of fish club are intense.

bonefish In reply to rah-bop [2014-06-25 23:58:09 +0000 UTC]

Could just be a species trait, then. She was a cutie despite her shyness and I loved when she'd come out to visit the front of the tank.

Aw man, it's always a downer to see endangered species in the pet trade when there's a high chance they were wild-caught for the purpose. Hopefully your local aquarium folks are working hard on getting a captive population going! That would take pressure off the wild ones (and make owning a D. erythromicron more guilt-free). I always had to wonder whether my CPD was wild-caught.

Hah, next time we talk you're going to have to regale me with stories about your fish club people.

Right now I've cut back the number of tanks I've got, mostly because I recently moved and I also keep chickens, which are enough of a handful on their own. Our new house has a layout that makes it difficult to put aquariums of any decent size around. But, in my bar I've got one 140-something gallon freshwater tank with four snakeskin gouramis, two weather loaches, and a giant banded dragonfin bichir in it named Colossus (plus a bunch of feeder guppies for Colossus to hunt that have managed to maintain their numbers by breeding without going nuts). My husband and I bought the bichir when we just started dating and he was maybe two or three inches long with the cutest fluffy salamander gills. He's pushing 15 inches now and is a gorgeous monster. He is a fantastic fish and I've actually got him trained to take food (usually bottomfeeder pellets or tubifex worm cubes) right from my hand. He's quite gentle, surprisingly, and the one time he did nip me, he was quick to let go and hasn't done it since. Next to that one we have a ten gallon with a decorative cork wall on the back of it with some black skirt tetras, black neon tetras, and a bunch of little kuhli loaches. And ALWAYS, always, always, live plants.

We're looking at getting a shrimp tank started up to breed cherries in. We had one a long time ago and I just adore the tiny shrimps. Over the years we've had plecos, clown loaches, a dinosaur bichir, a blue prawn named Leonidas (who died in a sudden and very unfortunate ammonia spike :< ), ghost shrimp, cherry shrimp, another weather loach named Mr. Whiskers (who was as thick as a hot dog and longer than one, too), algae eaters, clams, and pea puffers, and probably a whole bunch of stuff I'm missing.... My mother-in-law has a fifty gallon that was overrun with guppies so we bought her two baby leaf fish as a gift a few years ago. They're as big as my hands now and are just awesome to watch when they hunt. SUUUPER tiny-looking mouths until they snap them open to suck food in.

I could spew about this kind of stuff for a long time... haha....

AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHH I AM SCREAMING AND FLAILING WITH EXCITEMENT

Your 140-something sounds AMAZING and I wish I could see it! Bichirs are pretty much the best thing ever, and having raised it since it was a tiny baby ahhhh~~~ Everything else sounds amazing too. It sounds like you've really kept an assortment of great fish! Leaf fish!!! Ahhhh I'm so excited for you, you'll have to believe me when I say I'm doing my best to contain myself and it still comes out with this many exclamation marks.

Once you keep live plants you can never go back. Do you run CO2 in yours? Mine are low tech but I really need to start figuring out ferts soon. There's just so much to learn and sometimes I don't know where to begin. I'm doing okay for just bungling along, though. I'm getting there! Let me know if you ever want to trade plants sometime; I could send you some starts and trimmings.

Oh my gosh, I could listen to you tell me about fish forever so please don't feel like you have to stop on my account. Also feel free to send me pics. I love it alllllllllll aaaaughghsdgha

Haha! The tank is a bit of a sorry state appearance-wise right now... we just haven't had the time to do any of the usual trimming and pruning what with all of the house repairs we just started up again. The water's clean and clear and the fish are happy, so that's what we've been focusing on for the time being.

We actually have two fluval 405 canister filters running together on the big tank. We've got plumbing all worked in and even have two clear sections where CO2 WILL go, we just haven't gotten the stuff to put the injectors together, but it IS on the docket. Right now we've just got mostly grass, java ferns, and java moss (which we got for free from a pet store in a tiny clump like six years ago and we just CAN'T get rid of it now, haha). Those plants are tough as nails and propagate well on their own, so that's why we like them. When we have more time and money, we're going to be getting some baby tears as ground cover and a whole bunch of other stuff...I don't even remember what's on the list, it's just a bit pricey, lol. The first thing on the docket is a major light upgrade, though. We're shooting for some of those nice LED ballasts.

I'll definitely be on board for plant trading though. I think we're going to try farming moss balls in the shrimp tank when we get it set up. The grass we've got (which grows OBNOXIOUSLY fast and VERY long) is awesome at spreading quickly. We've got tons of little java fern shoots, too. Perhaps once we have more variety and things are spreading happily?

Also, I took a video of Colossus feeding yesterday morning, so I just have to slap that video up on tumblr at some point.... He was a bit snappy yesterday for some reason, though today he took the tubifex cubes ever-so-gently from my hand. He's just a cutie.

Java ferns are great! I always have so many babies floating around in my tank I don't know what to do... I just capture them and stick them in a jar. Every once in a while I'll find someone who wants them, and then they get like 50 java ferns. But if you ever want MORE for some reason, I have lace (windelov), trident, needle-leaf, and regular flavors. Just let me know and I'll save you some!

I have a fluval 405 too... is your super noisy? I have noise issues with mine... maybe it's broken. D: Anyway, I'm excited for you about the CO2. I hope it goes so well! Baby tears/HC is SOOOO beautiful. I can't get it to flourish without CO2 so I gave up, but I love seeing it in other people's tanks. It's just so gorgeous! I wish you luck!

Omg, can't wait to see your video!

Haha, I usually toss the baby java ferns into the ten gallon tank with the tetras... they probably hate all the little things floating around... :I

Here's the video: wingleader.tumblr.com/post/903…

Any plants you'd like to share would be more than welcome! My husband is all excited about plant trading and the first thing he said was "do they want some grass?"

WONDERFUL! He's gorgeous!!

My tanks are just exploding with plants already so the only things that would fit would be something small, like blyxa or smaller. I have some dwarf hairgrass already but without CO2 it doesn't spread at all, and only grows up instead of out. If you wanted to send me some I wouldn't turn it down! Thanks!

I just did a major trim the other day so it'll be a little while before I do it again, but when I do I can send you a list of what I've got and you can let me know if any of those appeal to you. Is there anything in specific you're looking for?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

KaiserFlames In reply to rah-bop [2014-07-01 17:51:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks!

We had that same problem with the dwarf hairgrass, too, and our weather loaches got really, really good at digging it all up and ended up killing it. I'm very much hoping that I can get something to establish itself really well, but that might be a tall order with such aggressive snoot-diggers.

As for things we're looking for...? Honestly, hardy stuff that can handle lower light conditions. As I said, we're looking at getting the LEDs soon, but we don't have 'em yet and the lights we have now just aren't handling the deeper water. The light just doesn't filter down far enough. I can let you know when we start giving the tank the attention we WANT to give it, but don't have the time for at the moment.

Thanks again! I'll definitely let you know.

It seems a shame to leave these with no comments. Danios are an awesome bunch. I'm very super impressed by any skill with watercolour, especially at such a small scale. You've got the colours, sheen and patterns spot on.
