Description The little boy came to her as she died. She lay flat in a hospital bed, was surrounded by hospital machinery, hissing and beeping the way hospital machines do.  The boy was nude, and glowed faintly, as if he were a poorly matted special effect.

"Are you an angel?" she gasped out.  It was hard to breathe, even harder to talk, and she was certain it came out slurred.  But he smiled just the same, shook his head.

"No.  What's an angel?"

Despite herself, she chuckled… an awful sound.  He moved in close, took her hand, waited for her wracking cough to subside.  His hand was small and warm in hers;  she gripped it as hard as she could, which was not hard at all, grateful for the warmth of contact.

"But… I'm dying.  You're here to take me, aren't you?"

"No.  I'm just here."  He cocked his head quizzically.  "What's it like to die?"

Oh brother.  She closed her eyes, calmed her breathing, used the machines' metronome-like beeping as a focal point.  When she opened her eyes again she fully expected the hallucination to be gone.

But it wasn't.  The naked golden child still stood politely by her bed, hand warm in hers.  Seeing her eyes open, he leaned in close, sniffed her, stood back again.

"You smell like you're dying," he observed.  "What's it feel like?"

"Like… going to sleep?  You're so tired you can't stay awake, and eventually you give up.  Let go, drift away.  Anyway, that's what I imagine it's like."

He nodded at this.  "What's sleep?"

"You're kidding.  Who are you?"

The boy bit his lip, looked away conspiratorily before leaning in close to whisper.  "I'm not supposed to be here at all.  But I was passing by, and saw you, and wondered.  So tell me.  What's it like?"

"To die?"

"Yes!"

"Sorry, kid… I can't explain it, nobody can.  And now I'm tired.  It's something you have to experience for yourself."

"Okay," he brightened, nodding once.

She staggered, gripping the withered hand, balancing on suddenly stubby legs, heart pounding impossibly fast with hummingbird speed.  In surprise, she gasped--

Inhaled.  God, the perfection of it.  Lungs full of air, without pain!  Instead of gasping, she laughed.  It came out as musical child's laughter.

And her eyesight, her vision… she saw perfectly in the dim hospital room, saw herself – her old self -- laying in the powered bed.  That old withered husk, that shell of what she was before.

It was trying to talk, so she leaned in with perfect, golden ears.

"Oh my," the creature on the bed gasped.  "This is… wonderful."

It turned to her, smiling as it died, and she held its hand.

Did he die as she lived?

celestial Golden boys wanting die as the old want more life?

OR do they? Did she ask? NOPE'

Maybe she was ready to die.

No... maybe she has to live another hundred years on this rock without any of her mates after they are all dead.

Who the shit would want to live forever?

With an internal time limit we'd never get the fuck on with anything.

Anyway. After life or ever living.

Its all going to get a bit old hat anyway after a thousand years in my opinion.

A haunting and captivating concept, one very dear to my own heart. Besides that: Perfect length, amazing moodscape, and the finish is spot-on.

I know I'll take any excuse to throw this expression around; but after re-reading this piece, like, eight times, I can say it has honestly, truly, utterly earned the facial expression I now bestow upon it:

WITH FIRST CLASS HONOURS

... OK who what was that child? Herself?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RalfMaximus In reply to AngelofGod87 [2012-06-06 17:17:20 +0000 UTC]

I didn't see it that way.

She became the child at the end, but I think he was just a different kind of intelligence passing through. Something ancient but not necessarily wise in the ways of man.

Maybe angels start out this way and take centuries to grow up? Not sure.

But the result of the exchange was that both got what they wanted. For the child: a unique experience ending (an assumed) very long, possibly immortal lifetime.

Make sense?

Not really... but then, sometimes it takes a little bit MORE imagination to fully understand where you're coming from Ralf.

It has already been said, but beautiful is a very fitting word for this. I love the mystery of the golden child and the innocence of his questions. At the same time, I feel haunted by the gnawing idea that this perfect little creature, who seemed so angelic and undaunted, dies with the words "This is...wonderful." If I were the old woman, those words would chill me. Such a perfect, painless child can still find a comparison as strong as "wonderful" to describe death, next to his own existence. It would make me wonder if I had not traded down to my new freedom and beginning.

A very thought-invoking piece. The simplicity of it only amplifies the experience. Very well done.

Dammit Ralf, don't you know that there are just some secrets to our existence that you don't give away!

Now I have to zip back into my home dimension and reprogram your universe to make sure this story never happened. Too bad, it was quite nice, a very enchanting read....

RalfMaximus In reply to BarbecuedIguana [2012-06-06 17:24:11 +0000 UTC]

Chances are, you already did this and the universe we're living in now is the result.

Causality is a biatch, my friend.

BarbecuedIguana In reply to RalfMaximus [2012-06-07 04:12:54 +0000 UTC]

No, if I had you would have been left faintly wondering, "Why did I waste that whole afternoon assembling a jigsaw puzzle of a lighthouse?" It's a common routine we run to redact bits and pieces of history.

Think about it the slow mind-rending assembly of banal pictures. Nobody really wants to waste their time doing them and yet millions are sold each year. You could do an interesting study tracking an amazing upswing in the sales of jigsaw puzzles and how it perfectly coincides with the development of quantum mechanics - but you would probably finish it only to discover that yet again you spent an enntire weekend assembling a jigsaw puzzle of two fluffy puppies dressed up like bunnies and sitting in an Easter basket.

As it is I lost my keys. I fear they may have fallen between the cushions of the couch and now are orbiting PCL-736. Oh well....

RalfMaximus In reply to BarbecuedIguana [2012-06-09 01:32:26 +0000 UTC]

You need to turn this into a story, pal.

Or at least use as character dressing in one. It'd be like if Douglas Adams wrote Inception.

BarbecuedIguana In reply to RalfMaximus [2012-06-09 21:07:24 +0000 UTC]

I think you're right!

Just as soon as I finish this new jigsaw puzzle. It's a magic eye poster of a 1950's television set showing tv static. I've got the outer frame done and it doesn't look like much more than a square of pink vomit, yet it is strangely oddly compelling....
