Description While in game meetings are mostly lukewarm question and answer sessions, I imagine that Arlana's reaction to meeting Loghain would be a little more interesting than that. Arlana would have a little case of hero worship when it comes to the legendary Hero of the River Dane.  He is, after all, a Ferelden celebrity respected across their country.  Surely little Arlana would have read the stories about their great battles and been partly inspired to become a warrior by his example?

"DUNCAN.  Do you know who that IS??"

Duncan is getting too old for this.  This is probably why there aren't more women in the Grey Wardens.

However I think the end result of the conversation you end up having with Loghain is the knowledge that he and Cailan are very divided in terms of strategy and that is more than a little worrisome.

Drawing wise I had fun playing around with Loghains angular older face shapes.  That hair really throws me off sometimes, but that's how he rolls.  But mainly I wanted him to look like an aged warrior, and old enough to have a grown daughter.

There's something I've never been quite able to puzzle out: Howe was Loghain's right hand man, so was Howe under orders to kill the Cousland family by Loghain? Or was he ordered to subdue them, but Howe got caught up in his own revenge and took it one step too far?

I think the second one. Loghains a pragmatist having them as hostages would have been more strategically sound.

Yeah same. At least in my headcannon, Loghain wanted to gain the Cousland's support, since they were second only to royalty. He'd have been willing to use Bryce's family as leverage against him, but he didn't want them killed. Then Howe goes and throws a wrench in his plans by murdering almost the entire Cousland family. Would've loved to see him explain THAT to Loghain.

He probably bullshitted out a story about them fighting back and his men being forced to kill them. Not that Loghain buys it though he just can't afford to loose the only ally he knows he can depend on, for his greedy ambition if nothing else.

I feel like, between Arlana and Alistair, Duncan probably does a lot of heavy sighing in Ostagar.  XD

I need to replay the game to remember what Loghain's reactions are to Howe's craziness.  I know you can tell him, I think he just claims that he was ignorant of his extracurricular activities.

I love how Arlana tries to hide behind Duncan, so cute. And how Duncan pushes her forwards, "tired of you, little lady"

I discovered this audience opportunity in my current playthrough... I planned to execute Loghain in this one but as he told my character something like not to be discouraged by those who say she could not be a Grey Warden as a female, because one of the greatest warriors he knew was a woman, it will not be so easy this time either.

RanmaCMH In reply to fluffypallas [2015-08-01 23:39:35 +0000 UTC]

"Tired of you, little lady," is by far my favorite fan caption for this and is now canon.

I started a game where my intention was to make all the decisions that I wouldn't normally make and just be terrible in general, but I also planned on keeping Loghain because I want to know what he's like as a warden!  Stalled out around Lothering just because it as my fourth playthrough in a row.  It's been years now, probably time to try again.

Yeah!  You have to talk to the guy guarding his tent and persuade him to let you talk to him. (I think that's how it goes... it's been a few years)

I really can't wait to see Ariana's first impressions of Alistair and Wynne. And Jory and Daveth too, even though they are not in the game long.

RanmaCMH In reply to niamaduir [2015-07-25 21:25:15 +0000 UTC]

On top of practicing gestures and body language, it's a great exercise to see if I can draw all of these different characters uniquely and not fall back on "stock facial features for guys/gals".  It's an easy trap to fall into.  I already have a little Jory/Daveth stuff drawn, but it's not so much meeting them as reacting to them during the joining.

That being said... keep letting me know who you are interested in seeing reactions too.  It helps get the creativity flowing...

also BLESS YOU for making Ser Cauthrien's armour not-so-much-boobplate

This is wonderful ^^

I am generally against the "exaggerated boob plate" unless it suits the character.  Ser Cauthrien feels very much like a "Brienne of Tarth" to me, and she is not a boob plate girl!!

Thank you so much. <3

Ah, Loghain. The man of the biggest contradiction. A celebrated and admired hero to warden at this point. A hated traitor just a little later. And he has managed to divide the players quite well too. There are those to whom he is just a traitor and then there are those who do understand and approve what he did at Ostagar (at least in some degree). I have to say that when I played DAO I belonged to the first group. Later on my view of him hasn't been such black and white although I still don't approve what he did. There is one particular quote in DAI which would perhaps best describe my current thoughts about him. It is when Herald talks with Solas about Fade and Ostagar:

Solas:
"That's just it. In the Fade, I see reflections created by spirits who react to the emotions of the warriors. One moment, I see heroic Grey Wardens lighting the fire and a power-mad villain sneering as he lets King Cailan fall. The next, I see an army overwhelmed and a veteran commander refusing to let more soldiers die in a lost cause."

What happened in the Ostagar was not so black and white after all. Still I think that if Loghain was so celebrated general as he was mentioned to be, he should had acted sooner on his own. If I remember right it is claimed that the wardens lit the beacon too late (very much possible as the tower was full of darkspawn) and Loghain knew that it was too late then. But if he was at a place where he could see and determine THAT, it should have been possible for him to analyse the situation and realise it much earlier and act before the beacon was lit. In other words he should had given the command to attack sooner when it was still possible to do. Every good leader and general must be ready to act on his own responsibility, even against the plan if the situation demands it. So in my opinion when Loghain just waited the beacon despite what happened on the field, he was at least a very poor general.

Well, I got a little excited. But Loghain is an interesting character to analyse. In the picture I like most the image of Ser Cathrien and Loghain. There you have managed to catch his appearance and essence perfectly. I also like how Arlana hides behind Duncan and how he pushes her towards her hero. Like some adult would push some 3-year old towards Santa Claus.

Glad to see more of this. I eagerly wait more.

RanmaCMH In reply to DeepWoodian [2015-07-25 21:32:47 +0000 UTC]

I think that's an interesting point about waiting for the beacon.  I really do enjoy Loghain and his complicated character motivations.  I also think it's worthwhile to keep in mind that they were arguing about Anora during their time at Ostagar too. It would be less than honorable (but perhaps the kind of thing a father might do) to let that motivate him to leave the battlefield as well.

I also really appreciated Solas's impressions from the fade, much like Varric's comments about Anders.  When you are in their respective games things can seem very black and white from your characters perspective, but it may not be everyone's feelings on the matter.

As always, thanks for the comments, thoughts, and compliments! <3  More comings soon!

Hehe, I am that kind of  (an odd?) person who likes to ponder these kinds of things, even about computer game characters.

Your remark about Anora being one motivation in Loghains actions is very likely true. What I have gathered (only from the games, I have not read any DA books) I think that Loghain didn't liked Cailan or his future plans very much. Loghain tried to be loyal to him because of his friendship and loyalty to Maric but that can go only to certain point. I think that when the battle in Ostagar started to go bad and signal was delayed, he somewhat realised that now he could get rid of Cailan (and his friendly ideas about Orlais) by just staying with the plan. That was actually an ideal situation. He didn't do anything wrong or criminal. He actually did nothing. He just saved the rest of the army from annihilation. But I do think that later he was somewhat uneasy because of this decision and he tried to ease his mind by finding a "true" culprit and accusing Grey wardens. It didn't hinder that he didn't liked wardens much and that people of Ferelden also needed some quilty party to blame.

I haven't played DAII but I always enjoy Varric's dry and sarcastic remarks about Anders.
