Description

I wanted to draw something quick-ish so I thought I'd just go for a portrait and somehow it turned a bit strange? As for why he's sad, I really don't know. Maybe he just really doesn't like butterflies P:

I love the subtle blue lighting on the side of his face. And the expression brings a lot of strong feelings.

wow! How long have you been doing digital art and were you self taught or took lessons (are there even lessons for digital art??). sorry for so many questions! Just curious Β

No worries, I like questions haha :3
I didn't take any classes in digital painting or Photoshop, but I did study visual arts and 3d animation in school. So kinda self-taught when it comes to Photoshop specifically, but I did study related stuff.

This portrait looks breathtakingly beautiful!
The color palette and butterflies make it look very atmospheric and melancholic!
And the boy is drawn really well and realistically, the shading, lighting and his expression turned out really well!

I like the mood of the picture and the pose it's well executed for something quick-ish!
The butterflies are a really nice touch but I would have maybe gone with less variety in their colouring to put him in a situation where he is actually swarmed or taken away if that makes sense (?)

The butterflies look a bit disconnected as well and I think that might be due to the shading. The portrait has a very clear light source behind him (well, kinda from the side) and you can see the strokes in the hair which gives him a lot of character. The butterflies are shaded a bit differently, very smooth and they lack the stronger highlight the character has. I still really like the picture though and your style is awesome!

Β Good work. You have nice shadow balance and good anathomy.

I love how you do these smooth strokes on face and hairs. But you need, i think, more smoother edges of butterflies.

Also, blue shadow on chin will looksΒ  more natural if be more smoother too

Keep going and improve you skills :3

Good luck.

Hi, I'm here from ProjectComment

First off, this is a really beautiful piece. I was looking through the group's folders, and this immediately caught my eye. It's not only pretty to look at, but you've done his expression so well that the piece carries a sombre, emotional weight. The minimal lighting and muted, earthy colors also add to this. You've done an exceptionally good job on his eyes. I love the detail you've put into the folds of the eyelids, and the highlights are placed where the light source would be and are well done. I appreciate how you've painted the tear, as well. It's noticeable and clear what it's supposed to be without being unrealistic and distracting. I also really like how you've done his hair. The coloring, detail and sheen to it are beautiful. You've done a really great job on his profile too. The curves of his lips and nose are realistic, and I like that you can see his eyelashes.

Really my only area of criticism would be on the butterflies. While beautiful, they look rather flat (though I do like how the ones in the background are blurred; that's a really nice touch). The way the light seems to glance off of some of them makes them look as though they're completely flat and smooth. I think some darker shading in places (where the wings meet the body, for example) and adding some texture to the wings would help make them look more natural.

Over all, this is a gorgeous artwork and definitely going in my favorites. Keep up the great work!

Butterflies are a tragic creature with such a short lifespan.

If you were to look into the greek mythos of Thanatos (not to e mistaken for thanos) his sacred animal was the butterfly.

I see a man sad and full of sorrow as those he loved in life have turned into butterflies, leaving him all alone.

The variety of colors used on the butterflies really make the eye move around the image and rest on his sorrowful eyes.

The simplistic background is gentle and allows the viewer to not be distracted by the important elements in the piece

All I can give to you are the strong points I do see. Your work is very fine tuned and even if it was a quick piece you seem to have balanced the image out so its enjoyable to see.

So beautiful!
There must be some meaning with butterflies surrounding sadness.
Comfort? Being haunted by ones now lost? A facade to hide one's true feelings? Who knows!
You have done a fantastic job with this painting!

I love the toned-down rainbow of colours on top of the earthiness of everything else! It looks pretty nostalgic, actually-
Oooo, maybe it could be a metaphor for inability to smile due to some inner sadness, despite the beauty around you?Β

I like this
The quickness has shown you a different path then you'd normally take.
The colors attract me a lot.
Not to vibrant but is has this lowkey glow going on.
Also, his sadness must be truly bittersweet as he attracts those butterflies like he'd be honey

mannn I adore those butterflies! they are SPOT ON and so vibrant and beautiful! o:
also I just accidentally bit my lip while commenting and blood is leaking ahhh

anyway, back to the comment //sweats
the muted portrait makes the butterflies really stand out, which is an interesting contrast! I think some of the butterflies in the distance (specifically the one right on the left) could be faded a bit more but that's really minor haha
the portrait looks awesome! also something minor but the mouth doesn't really seem aligned to the jaw, either the features are placed too high or the jaw is a biiit too low (but again this is really minor, like millimetre minor xD)

great job!! (:
