To me, he's kind of a meh. He seemed to be a great guy, but didn't have some good policies here and there.

The only good thing I can credit him for is deregulating televised programming, which led to "toy commercial" cartoons like G.I. Joe, Transformers, Thundercats, He-Man, etc, all of which were precursors to the great animation renaissance of the 90's by paving the way with their creative stories and engaging characters, all of which have clearly left an impact on many to this very day.

Other than that, Reagan can go fuck himself.

On the other hand he inspired some great comedy check out "Spitting Image" the British puppet satire - Chris Barrie the comedian did a brilliant impersonation of him on it. "Ronald Reagan - The President's Brain Is Missing" is now on Youtube so even Yanks can watch it

He and Thatcher said "Well, there's no crisis, why have regulations?", without realizing that regulations had been established to PREVENT possible crisis. (The financial crisis in the 1980s happened because of their de-regulation policies.)

In Spain, the closest match is José María Aznar. I despise him too.

As far as Reagan goes I can see why you as a citizen of America would dislike him - Let us just say that I myself believe that most of his domestic policies which your republican party continues to champion have long outlived any usefulness they might have had.  However, many in Europe see him as a man who helped bring about the end of the threat of nuclear war over the European Continent during the Cold War.  It took men like Reagan and Gorbachev who realized what nuclear war really meant to set aside their difference and sit down together.  Love him or hate him, one must at least give him the credit for his part in coming to the table with Gorbachev.

I kind of agree (though it was Gorbachev who pushed for stalling the nuclear race and got the peace prize for it), but inside the US, socially and economically speaking, he fucked up.

AdmiralMichalis In reply to HispanicWitch [2017-10-03 17:21:19 +0000 UTC]

Of course this is not to take away from Gorbachev's part in this either - I think Gorbachev was (and still is) a very pragmatic political figure who realized that there was only one way to achieve a more peaceful situation in Europe and that was to end the hostilities between the superpowers; a mindset and man whom I have much respect for.  However, it took a man in the White House who shared this idea to make it a reality - This man was Reagan.

(Still, in what respects to US domestic issues, Reaggan's policies didn't work out well.)

And so were other presidents before him, he wasnt even the president that saw the fall of the USSR.

He did more harm then good, he completely destroyed the US labor movement, added on billions in debt, left US soldier to die in Lebanon, Iran Contra and so on.

AdmiralMichalis In reply to RedAmerican1945 [2017-10-03 17:13:05 +0000 UTC]

Other Presidents may have attempted and succeeded in nuclear de-escalation talks, but it was Reagan and Gorbachev who, together, ended the threat of nuclear war in Europe.  I never said he saw the fall of the USSR or even that it was necessarily his doing, but he played a critical part to facilitate a peaceful coexistence between the USA and the USSR and in doing so helped to end the threat of a nuclear conflict during the Cold War.

Like I said, I think most of the policies he executed have long outlived any kind of usefulness they once - if ever - had.  However, one cannot deny that his work had a positive impact on the continent of Europe and regarding the relationship between the USSR and the United States.
