Description At long last I present to you, in her full and completed form....~byzy !

More colors and details than I think that I have ever crammed into a single piece, but it all seemed to have worked out and come together in the end! I actually don't think that I even forgot anything this time...though I may be mistaken.

Thank you very much!

Yes, painting did take a looooong while! Soo many colors to deal with, plus allowing for things to dry out decently was a worthwhile pain in the neck.

*Goggles* The incredible detail on this is mindblowing. How long does it take to do a sculpture like that? Thanks for the links for your in progress too, it's about time I learned how you build your masterpieces ^_^

Hehe, thank you!

This one took a very very long time. If I amassed all of the hours together, it was at least 5 days straight. Well worth the effort, though.

That response had me in stitches, especially when you admitted to Caps Lock abuse! I really am glad that you like it! You were a really tough design, and I really wanted to make sure that I remembered everything and got it as right as was possible for me to do. I guarantee you that this is MUCH better looking in real life too (the colors and textures are more apparent).

Try not to abuse your keyboard too badly, hehe!

That's amazing! Excellent work on all the details. The paintjob is wonderful. The pose is just adorable. Great work. I'm really impressed.

I attempted a Byzy sculpture ages ago, but I broke it and never finished it, so opted for a headshot drawing instead.

Because you succeded where I failed miserably.

Thank you very much! She is tough, and I know how frustrating it is when things break. I had that happen once before (the whole thing fell apart in the oven - complete loss), and trying to start over was tedious. But hey, we all pick up the pieces somehow! If I tried to draw her I'd erase a hole right through the paper!

Watching this come to life was wonderful - she has really turned out lovely. The markings look to be well worth the effort that went into them and I admire your committment in painting on textured surfaces (Just on that note I'll mention the fur texture is very nifty ).

I noticed that the colour on her wings is in sharp bands whereas I think it could be nicer if it were blended more together to make a smoother gradient. Though then again, I don't know the character or the wonderful tricky technicalities that come with painting these things so you may have been limited there.
The wings also look a little stiff and thick - though I'm not sure how to go about wings myself in sculpting so I won't be much of a use with suggestions! However, I did hear once that some use fine wire mesh or chicken wire to support the thin membrane of the wing.
(There's a tutorial on ConcepArt.org that has something similar to that. I would link to the specific post that I'm thinking of, but DA does annoying things with emoticons in hyperlinks. So here's the whole tutorial; [link] The whole thing is really interesting and informative though - I just read it for fun and inspiration.)

I really do love her pose and the little pawpads. For all the effort that went into this, I'll say a job well done!

RedDrgn In reply to cryslara [2006-10-23 12:26:46 +0000 UTC]

Thank you very much, and thanks for the link as well! I didn't read the whole thing, but so far I've found quite a few useful little tidbits! *stores in away for more reading*

Actually, the wing colors are supposed to be a gradient. However, I found that I stink at making smooth gradients. I worked at the red-orange barrier for several hours and just couldn't get what I thought was right, eventually gave up and made a very narrow gradient (which the camera completely destroyed, though you're not missing much). That's something I've just not done much of and need to practice.

The wing is thick for the sole purpose of support. Using wire mesh was suggested to me before, but I haven't yet been able to find any fine enough to work. The craft stores around here are severely lacking (even though we have tons of them). I never thought of using chicken wire, but I know I can get it and may try that. As it is, there is wire up the wing arm and out the leading wing finger - the rest is solid clay.

Thanks for the tips and comment, though! Every little bit helps!

Rainbows, stripes and spots! This is so visually appealing, I'm awed. And it's not just the pretty colors and patterns that make it so fun to study; there's all the curves and bends and textures too. I really like this, she looks so playful and friendly.

What gorgeous colours, and such a creative pose!

May I ask for tips on the foil and wire? i haven't been able to find the proper kind of wire...

RedDrgn In reply to dragonwolfstryde [2006-10-20 12:58:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Sure, I give whatever tips that I know of when asked. The foil portions are just wadded up household aluminum foil. I also use 11.5 gauge aluminum armature wire (for the wings typically). You can find the wire in most craft stores, though I find it cheaper to purchase online at Dick Blick Art Supplies .
