Description Sadly, the photographs just do not do this sculpture proper justice. Short daylight hours mean that I am never home when the sun is up any more, so I had to do what I could with the flash (which was nasty against the semi-gloss finish). So, you'll just have to take my word for it that this dragon looks infinitely more colorful and lovely in person than it does here.

Now that the disclaimer is out of the way, I give you my part of a Secret Santa exchange on a forum that I frequent. This was my first time participating, and I must admit that I was about scared out of my wits when I found out that I was to work on a gift for the extremely talented ~cryslara ! I was moderately consoled by the fact that she seems extremely kind and friendly, and that I doubted that she'd bite me if what I produced wasn't perfect or even awesome, but still - I was scared.

I wanted my gift to be unique and my newest best above all else, so I worked very hard at those aspects. Since it was for a Christmas gift, I decided to try my hand at doing an ornament (though it is a bit large to hang on a tree ). I then thought that if I was going to go through the trouble of making a suspendable dragon creation that I should at least have it doing what winged dragons do best; flying.

Of course, the issue of balance and support were my first concerns; the former of which I never dealt with before and latter something that I never used on a full wingspan. Fantastic. So I stressed again. Fortunately, I remembered some of the skillfull dragon sculptors of dA and how some of them would use aluminum mesh for wing support, so I ran out and grabbed some!

The rest is history since the balance was purely accidental (I kid you not), and the detailing was due to a few stunning reference sheets that I was provided!

I will admit that the tail was initially supposed to be more level with the body, with the tail tip curving slightly up. However, I short-changed myself on the tail framing and the tail spades proved too heavy to maintain the pose without me tear half the body apart to re-armature. I will also admit that the wings are far too small according to my references, but that that was purposeful. Since I intended for this to actually be a tree-worthy ornament, fully proportioned wings would have been far too large. Now that I know the full weight of it, I may as well have gone the whole nine yards on the wings.

I know the the colors and color variations are a loss on these photos, and that some of the scale and limb-position detailing is, too, but I'm still very proud of this and I reeeeaaaally hope that ~cryslara likes it...even just a little bit.

Aluminum foil, armature wire, and mesh (1/16" holes).

WOW Fae, that is AWESOME! You really captured Cryslara in this, I think...I knew it was her immediately upon seeing the image! The colors are rich, the anatomy is carefully and realistically done, and those little stones bring so much shine and fun to the ornament!

I hope you make more, this is so cool!

I love the pose with the legs tucked up, you have a great sense of anatomy. The sculputure even looks alive before the paint job, which is really cool XD

Thank you! I'm trying to get some sense of anatomy, because even recently I had about none. That's an area I've been focusing hard on lately.

I'm working on making anatomy up in a wire frame sculpture of my dragon to reference in her different anthro and full dragon positions, since she doesn't literally change forms, just stands up. I need to remember to add her head and wings... XD the photomanipping bug bit me so other stuff is on hold now ^x^;

I squee giddily every time you post a new sculpt. The wings really turned out wonderful.. are you going to use the mesh again? Was it hard to squish the clay into? I think it really made a difference for the wingspars.. they look very straight and elegant and strong.

RedDrgn In reply to notreallypurple [2006-12-19 14:33:11 +0000 UTC]

Hehe, thank you!

Oh yes, I will definitely be using the mesh in all future work. It's very pliable and expandable, so I am sure that I can use it for a much broader range of things than just wings, though for wings...I'm not sure how I ever did them without it. Yes, it's very easy to work clay over them. I'd just stick a blob of clay on them and then start pressing and stretching it over the mesh until it was covered. Then I would thin it down until I could see the mesh through the clay and clean off all excess while smoothing it. Very quick and easy!

I seriously cannot express how much I love this - you've left me without words! This has broken the 'incredibly awesome' scale in so many ways; I literally danced on seeing it.
Thank you so, so, so much for this wonderful Christmas gift. This is beyond beautiful and I'm in awe of the fact that it's for me. The wings, ears, pose, expression, spines.... the wings! Fweeeeeeee!

Although I may be dreadfully biased, , I really believe this is one of your best sculptures yet. Everything is handled wonderfully (hurrah for accidental balance - the best things in art are always mistakes! ). I haven't been able to wipe this smile off my face since laying eyes on it.

I'll drop you an email in a moment with my address because nothing would make me happier than to own it. You are so amazingly sweet and awesome - thank you.

RedDrgn In reply to cryslara [2006-12-05 13:40:31 +0000 UTC]

Yay!! I'm just relieved and happy that you like it!

No, I agree that this is one of my best sculptures, and probably because there were so many new elements in this that all magically seemed to come together perfectly at just the right time. The only thing that every got reworked on this was the head, which I initially started, cut off, and then remade.

I know there are some errors, such as not bringing the scales far enough down the forehead and not having enough of those little gem scales, but there always seems to be something that I miss initially and notice after it's all done. But yay none the less and you are most welcome! I'll set her flying over the sea by the end of the week. Let me know when she arrives so that I don't have to worry about any wrong turns being made en route.

Kazikie In reply to RedDrgn [2006-12-08 14:52:46 +0000 UTC]

ok well I guess i will ask it here then. I am presently working on a water fountan sclupture. It is a waterfall water fountan.lol hope that made since. And at the bottem of the fall there will be a basin were the water collects and flows back under the fall to thw pump. So I guess the question is. do you think I should make the top part (the water fall part) a totally seprate that sits on the basin. or could I get away with having all one piece. And I was also wondering how I would go about water proofing the inside of a small hole. At the top of the fall I whant to have a dragon head shaped rock that shoots the water out it's mouth that is fed by the pump. Thanks for the help. and if you need more info or maby a drawing to go by let me know I will try my best. lol (I can't draw very well)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedDrgn In reply to Kazikie [2006-12-08 18:22:20 +0000 UTC]

Hmmm, well, it depends on the pump. If the pump will be external and easily accessible (including tubing), then you could make it one solid piece (unless it's large and would be too bulky). If you choose to go with two pieces, then make the base and bake it first. Then building the rest on top of it and rebake the whole thing. Just cover the exposed once-baked portions with wet cotton balls or paper towels and secured them with an aluminum foil cover to prevent burning. That way it will fit together perfectly, and yet you'll be able to dissaemble it to get to the pump, tubing, or just make it easier to move around.

I would use a clear epoxy to seal around any holes. Just be careful of the order in which you paint and seal. If you paint first and then epoxy, it could crack or discolor the paint (I've had that happen once - on the dragon pentacle). You should either seal first, allow to thoroughly dry, and then paint, or paint AND varnish first and then seal. I haven't run across a glue or epoxy that effects the paint or surface when varnished.

I hope that helps.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kazikie In reply to RedDrgn [2006-12-09 01:39:45 +0000 UTC]

Ok thanks for the help. The pump it's self is small and and internal. But I am thinking that it will be easly removable. So I think one piece would be suitable. The whole sclupter won't be too big. but not too small eaither. The bigest part would be the basin at the bottom because it has to big enough to catch the over splash from the fall.

Is the apoxy, paint, and varnish a special type or just a standard type? And is there a local place you can get sclupey or do you just oder it online? Thanks again for all the help

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RedDrgn In reply to Kazikie [2006-12-11 14:51:53 +0000 UTC]

I order Super Sculpey online from [link] because it's cheaper than the local craft stores around here that carry it. However, you should be able to find it in most craft stores. I've never had too much trouble doing that in a pinch.

The paint and varnish must be water soluable/water-based. Standard epoxy and super glue seems to work just fine.
