Description I have finally completed my half of a trade with , a wonderful artist who was kind enough to do a drawing of my husband's dragon character, Maelstrom . I took too long and still managed to make too many errors, but overall, I am pleased with it and I hope that she will be, too.

Leccathu is the first dragon character which I have made a repeat attempt at. My first attempt can be seen here , since I have had a number of people ask where I kept a picture of it. So without boring you further, here's what I think the pros and cons of this piece are:

Pros:

1. Standing on four legs, solidly, not wobbly, well supported, and overall awesome.
2. The most anatomical (musculature) detail that I have ever worked into a sculpture. Much thanks to Leccathu for amazing reference works...which I will likely continue to use in order to improve on anatomy for all future dragonish sculptures.
3. The wing position. It took a lot of work, wire, and patience to get them to hold parallel to the ground without "over-beefing" the joints.
4. One of the most detailed paint jobs that I have yet done. All colors excluding the dark brown were custom mixed by me, and (I think) are more true-to-actual colors than previous sculpture.

Cons:

1. Forelegs appear too narrow from the front.
2. Head appears to wide from the front. I think it looks great from the side, and didn't notice a problem until after I painted it.
3. I forgot the little ridge of scales along her lower jaw. x's 2
4. I managed to forget to paint the undersides of her paws and wing-hands in a whitish coat. x's 3
5. I didn't extend the tail spikes down the tail far enough. x's 4

But, yeah, overall, I am happy.

Macro horn reference shots are available here , since I did have a request for that.

Aluminum foil, armature wire, super sculpey, and acrylics.

That's Leccathu, alright! You are so talented with these sculptures, you really capture the dragons' spirits. This one is particularly stunning for a number of reasons, but primarily because you nailed the details and features of Lec that make her so unpique (her horns, her tail, that broad face!).

Excellent job!

I have to admit that Leccathu is one of the hardest dragons I have ever sculpted. Hands down. She really is unique, and trying to capture all of the qualities that make her so special is not an easy task. It was rewarding to finish this and be able to say that it was undoubtedly Leecathu, but she is one dragon I must redo periodically just to see how I might improve.

I particularly like the structure and position of the wings. You did a great job on this! The pose is basic, but it really works- the wings offset it nicely.

Thank you! Yeah, I know the pose isn't special, but I just wanted to be able to get all of the character detail into it without over complicating it much. The wings were a real bugger, but overall I was please.

I love the tail. For some reason, that stands out to me. Fantastic job overall, but the tail looks like it should *move*.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RedDrgn In reply to talyra [2006-02-07 13:12:02 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! The tail only moves when you pick it up. It would be neat to somehow make these things move, though. I have no idea how to even start with that and it'd probably involved expensive things, but it is a thought!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

talyra In reply to RedDrgn [2006-02-07 16:14:09 +0000 UTC]

Well, I meant it ought to move in the sense that it looked real... that the dragon would swish its tail and then turn round and look at you... I've no idea how you could actually make it move... except using plasticene and stop-motion animation

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RedDrgn In reply to talyra [2006-02-07 16:46:55 +0000 UTC]

Oh I know what you meant, but you got me to thinking on how to make that actually happen. I never worked with plasticene before, but it could become a future endeavour.

You're too hard on yourself. This is incredible. I'm just going to stare at it for hours now! The anatomy looks really accurate and the wings are beautifully crafted. And the paint job is professional. Whoo!

RedDrgn In reply to Helaris [2006-02-06 13:55:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, I think that I need to be hard on myself. It makes me want to do even better next time around! For instance, the one I am working on now for Kazikie...I keep reminding myself to fill out the legs properly, to add musculature, to define the skull, better, etc. I'm not going to give up, but being my own worst critic helps me push myself to do even better.

And thank you for the compliments, too! They always make me feel that despite any mistakes, accomplished something good.

Aww... he so cute!

A few things to note, The jawline would have looked a tad better it it had been given more on an edge. Also, you might have wanted to add a slight hinting of muscle tone to the wings, to give it more depth. Still, it's really well made, great job!

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RedDrgn In reply to Naiomi [2006-02-06 13:57:28 +0000 UTC]

Thank you!

Yep, I made a mental note of the jawline. Another respondant pointed that out as well, and I agree. I am trying to do so with my current piece that I am working on now and I plan to expand on detailing out the anatomy and musculature more as I go. I am just getting the hang of that.

Thanks for your compliments and critique! Much appreciated!

Yay! I'm happy that you like it!

I always out dimensions on the pictures as lengthxwidthxheight, so your sculpture is 8 inches (20.32 cm) long, 8.5 inches (21.59 cm) wide, and 4.5 inches (11.43 cm) tall. Eeek, no crying either! *offers tissue* You did an awesome picture of my husband's dragony-spirit, so I did my best in return. Dionisis can vouch for size and durability as he checked it out while visiting over the weekend. Just let me know where you want this to be shipped and I will have it in the mail in a few days.

And you're lucky that I just washed my feet.

Sculpting can be deceptively difficult, as I can attest. But, done right, one has a nice reference to base drawings from

People almost always have trouble with scultping the limbs, but I'd say that these came out quite well. The forearms look a bit too forearm-y to be walking around on at length, but then, that's up to the dragon in question. The only aspect that might strike me as being off is the head. That's a rather wide muzzle (though again, it varies for everyone), but all in all the shape of the skull doesn't apprear to be defined clearly. Definition is lacking when viewed from the sides or from below...

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

RedDrgn In reply to ChaoseVIIn [2006-02-03 12:45:29 +0000 UTC]

A good reference and trying again and again. I agree with the forearms, but again, I didn't really notice that until just before I put it in the oven. I would have had to tear off the wings to fix them because they are ultimately attached internally and I didn't want to screw anything else up in the process. I also agree with the muzzle. I didn't even get the over-wide impression until after I painted it. The not-so-clearly-defined skull was purposeful. Looking at the first sculpture that I did of her, I thought it was to clearly defined, particularly around the jaws and horns and seems almost skullish. Now I left a bit much definition out....and so next time I need a happy medium.

Thanks for the comments and critique, though. I appreciate it muchly!

Lovely work! That's a lot of speckles, hehe. I think my favorite details here are the horns and the hind feet. I don't know why, but they look wicked in the second pic down on the left. ^^

Hehe, thanks Shads! Yeah, the speckles took awhile and there are a ton of them. I went through half dozen toothpicks to make all of those.

Holy crap! She looks awesome!!!! *oggle oggle* So gorgeous! All the markings and proportions seem right to me! The head may be a little bit wide but not that much, really. And I think the width of the front legs is fine, too. Nice musculature (always a difficult thing to do), and you even did all the details on the curly horns!

Definitely a !!!

And I'm going to have to agree with Cyrakhis on this one: she's gonna have a cow!!!

RedDrgn In reply to R-Eventide [2006-02-02 14:16:35 +0000 UTC]

Thank you! I really worked hard on this because she is such a unique dragon and has so many little things that have to come together to make her, her. Plus, as I said, I need to improve on repatative attempts or I will quit entirely.

Thanks for your kind words! Leccathu has favorited it, but I have seen nor heard anything else from her.

(I wish I was that good with sculpey... For whatever reason the stuff I made either got overcooked or undercooked. Stupid oven!)

Thanks! Well, if you look in my scraps at the very first thing I submitted in Sculpey (the 'weirdosaurus'), you will see just how awful I was. Practice, practice, and curiosity will win out. I've come a long way and have a longer one to go.

Bake Sculpey at 275 degree F for 15 minutes per 0.25-inch of thickness, it says on the box. They mean it, too! It can be very finicky and you need to make sure your oven really is at the temperature it says it is. I learned that the hard way.
