From personal Journal : Terranor Harper McVey

Our first hour into the assignment found us in a formation, cruising over the town of Happy Jack Arizona. Always loved those old goldminers names for towns. Above us, Vokun and Tyxamous lazily flapped along, occasionally circling to let the students catch up. I was very glad these two were with us, for the unexpected things that may come. That reminded me of the things that we knew would come, I needed to get our two Dad’s with the plan.

Fiddling with the Dravicom, selecting just Vokun and Tyxamous, then hitting “paging” which would open a private channel with just them. Using a slight nudge in course, I put some space between the teens and me.

“Tyxamous, are you there?” I asked.

“I’m here, Chaparral Lead”, he replied.

“Vokunkronah, are you listening?” I asked.

“I hear you,” in his deep voice.

“Both of you are with me on a private radio channel, I’m doing this to keep you both aware of something that we will be using to test our class. In one hour, a formation of light planes will approach us from ahead. They will be flown remotely by members of Dragon Operations Group 404. They are here to test the students. DM and myself will appear to be caught off guard by them, so we would like this to be your posture as well. Please let the students take the initiative. Also, tomorrow morning, we will be visited by a trio of dragons working with 404, posing as rogue hierarchy clan members trying to trap and abduct them, at 8 am. This is planned for the class members as a test of their abilities.” I said.

“Understood” from Vokun, followed by “Very well,” from Tyxamous.

The next entry on the Dravicom set our radios back to the group channel.

“Chaparral group, close up together please,” I warned. The group was beginning to get spread out, but were soon moving together again.

“Chaparral Lead to Sierra Leader, checking in at reference point 9L, Happy Jack,” I spoke next.

“Understood Chaparral” from Rex, back at the field.

“Understood Chaparral, continue your hourly reports, Doghouse out,” from the command center in Tonopah, the General’s people keeping an eye on us as well. Maybe even NORAD was tracking...good grief.

All of this really was beginning to wear on me, radio language normally used for attack airplanes, plus the dozen dragons in a formation similar to what such warplanes would follow. A lot of the joy was going out of being a dragon. Was it worth it? Thinking back to the day I found the transformational object (always felt that they somehow found you too) would I touch it again?

Hardly a second elapsed as I thought, yes - as a matter of fact - I would. I enjoy taking this form, and if some out there can’t deal with it, that is too ********bad. Wondering if Buster was waking up to his new configuration this morning. Was he asking the question I just did? What was the answer, I wondered.

Were any more of us twelve taking stock of draconity along with its meaning this morning? Who knew.

This has to get better, every new culture- joining with others sometimes has this happen. Sometimes blood is spilled, but in the end, a solution is found. Maybe this class will speed that day along. Maybe Rex the idealist was getting to me, I chuckled.

Looking down for a Nav fix, sure its on the screen near the left paw but I like to keep track of our earth too. There’s the Union Pacific spur line going north, with the highway alongside. Got the forest fire watchtower outside of Snowflake on the right side, now off to the far left, here comes Meteor Crater with the old route 66, astride the new I-40 just above it. On course, on time.

-----------Belton Airfield, Sierra group:

“Yeah, Ok, really funny kids, c’mon now, let me outta here!” I sat back down. We had our share of practical jokes, but I thought that most of that was now in the air with Chaparral group and the teens. Then remembered the Dravicom, almost spoke until I realized that if not careful, Tonopah Command room would figure out I had been locked inside of a port-o-let....

Using the paging function, found Shinkou was switched on so asked him to perform a rescue, quietly.

“Shin, this is Rex, I need a favor, buddy.....”

------------20,000 ft over Tuba City, Northern Arizona, with Chaparral group, one hour later:

From Journal of Zorath:

My sister Abria was getting tired, but we were almost to the Grand Canyon as our lunch stop. I was staring over the painted desert then taking my camera out for some snap’s. Bloody brilliant day for a tour, perfect weather, away from that bulls-eye of an airport.

“This is Negadrake, hey guys - there are a bunch of airplanes coming at us!”

“This is DM, where exactly are they, give us a clock position, as we discussed in class, and stay calm, Nega’”

“Ok, they are at our twelve o’clock, just a bit lower- three of them,” from Negadrake.

“This is Terry, DM along with Tyx and Vokun are separated from you after that last cloud bank, you need to act on your next move.”

“Zorath here, Chapparal group- 90 degree left turn, go.... we have to see about their intentions, first step.”

The group makes a hard left turn but staying together, the three bogeys are turning right to follow alongside them, closing slowly.

“Crazikc here, they have followed us through the turn, Chapparal, turn left again to reverse our course, heading should be 090 - East...go”

The group doubles back on itself, but the other craft follow. Once could be coincidence, twice is NOT....

“This is DM, they are following us, intent is HOSTILE. What next, class?”

“Zorath here, be ready to separate but only if needed and only to our three groups. If they approach- Sturalkhe along with Aria and Crazikc take the aircraft on left. Bryce, Ignis and Nega’ - you have the one on right. Abria and I have the helicopter coming up the center.”

“Terry here, good plan- Zor’ keep yourselves above them with the sun behind you as much as you can. Do not let them turn into your six o’clock. Dive if you have to or be ready to roll - up.”

“Ignis here, they look like drones, they’re smaller.”

The onrushing bogeys break into individuals, turning hard to approach from behind, a firing pass is starting!
With no hesitation, the teens break to their three groups then roll out of their way. One passes close to Negadrake.

“This is Terry, permission to engage and DESTROY.”

“Nega, this is Zor, scorch him!” Negadrake turns right then breathes a fire stream but it falls behind the plane, he forgot to lead the aim ahead of it. Time for a second try as he throws it well ahead which makes it coincide with the plane as it reaches the spot. The stream expands into a fireball with wreckage bits.

“Watch out, Crazikc - the other is circling you, this is Vokun’ “

The Purple dragon executed a perfect snap-roll then turned in behind the plane but descending. All he had to do was hold out a claw at the last second, cleaving the craft’s tail off just behind the cockpit.

“Chalk up two for the home team! This is Tyxamous, watch out Zorath, helicopter is on to you from below!”

Seeing it already, Zorath with Abria did a hard reverse, sometimes called a tail slide, but not before he breathed an ice cloud ahead of him. The helicopter, intending to mince him with rotor blades instead saw the two dragons fall below then behind him as he found his rotors encrusting in ice, slowing to zero and ...express elevator, going down....next stop, basement!

“This is Zorath, Chapparal assemble on me, watch for further attackers!”

As they completed their asssembly back into formation, above them, a stop watch button was pushed.

“This is Terry, Congratulations to all of Chapparal group, you engaged a simulated attack by experienced drone operators, making correct determination of hostility, properly arraying your teams then destroying all three agressors with minimal exposure to yourselves, all in 98 seconds. Lunch is on me!”

“This was a --- Test?” from Aria.

“Affirmative, while your score was to be 94 percent due to slower turns into your teams as they approached, you gained it back by Zorath calling for continued vigilance at the end, it is very important to keep in defending posture until it can be verified that all threats are removed, with the battle truly over.” Said DM.

“This is Tonopah Training Squadron Center, the engagement is awarded to the Dragon team, well done.”

“This is CINC-NORAD... Good Job, Chaparral group”

Heads looking at each other in amazement.

“This is Sierra Group lead at Belton, Fine work, everyone.” followed by a distant muffled “Rex, I’m gonna have to melt you outta there, hang on” then a “Wait, Shinkou!!!!********* then static.

Was thinking of developing the plot further by you discovering that your darkness projected can in fact block radar signals along with s-band transciever, basically rendering drones uncontrollable. Maybe in a future proj....

Some devastating what?

Also, I REALLY hope Shinkou knew that was a fake attack... otherwise we may have trouble. Same story w/ the faux Hiearchy members the next day.

Oh, the staff of the school knew all about the training attacks.

Yeah, now that I think about it, should have had you swap with DM and accompany the training mission, with Aria there. I always miss a few things...

No, you made the right choice. I probably would've done more than I should have in dealing with the faux assaults. Heat of the moment.

In fact, I'm probably going to be elsewhere during the faux Hiearchy attack tomorrow. Just to be on the safe side.

Sweet little chapter. And a good simulated fight on top of that. Excellently done Rex, can't wait for the next one.
