Story:

Iluq Forest, on the southern side of the Tartok Mountains, was renowned for its expansive evergreen groves and foliage-filled glades.  Animals thrived in the moderate climate and magic seemed to fill the air.  Sura listened to the sound of mating bird calls, their notes filling the air with harmonious melodies, as she walked along side of Neisha, her gorgeous albino Tokota with stunning red eyes and a pretty pink nose.  They had set out on a simple journey that day, with no specific task or goal in mind for Sura – other than to enjoy the beautiful weather they had been blessed with.

Neisha’s soft, pink paw pads moved noiselessly through the green grasses and fragrant blooming flowers.  Sura stopped, bending over to pick a golden flower, breathing in its sweet scent, before tucking it into her hair behind her ear.  Neisha turned to look, curious as to what had made Sura stop, and then continued walking forward at a leisurely pace.  She could smell the scents of multiple animals in the area – the birds singing from above, the squirrels dancing between the tree branches with their fluffy tails, and the scent of a herd of does, not far from where the girls were walking.

She lifted her nose into the air, focusing on the direction of the smell as her ears pricked up excitedly.  Sura watched, knowing that Neisha was honing in on a particular creature’s sound or scent.  She reached up, lightly touching the large albino’s soft shoulder fur, as Neisha began to focus her eyes, ears and nose on an area just ahead of them.  She was eager – excited even – but did not show any signs of worry or agitation, and Sura knew that whatever Neisha had found, it did not pose a threat to either of them.

“Go get ‘em,” Sura said softly, as she lightly patted Neisha’s shoulder reassuringly.

Sura stood in place and watched, not wanting her sounds or smells to scare off whatever Neisha found.  Neisha walked forward, slow and steadily.  It wasn’t a hunting or stalking type of pace, but a casual, non-threating stride.  Neisha was a gentle Tokota – one who was much more inclined to befriend creatures than she was to hunt/kill them… and quite often, she would bring home all sorts of new friends with her.

Sura’s eyes followed Neisha’s route, and realized that the albino female was headed right towards a group of six does that was grazing nearby.  The does seemed to realize what was going on at the very same time, and lifted their heads, some of them still chewing a mouthful of food.  Their large ears were alert and their big round eyes focused right on the approaching Tokota.  For some reason, they didn’t run.  They were very attentive, aware of Neisha’s presence, but did not flee – almost as if they could sense that she was not going to hurt them.

Sura gasped in wonder, as she watched her beautiful female Tokota walk right up to the herd, greeting their inquisitive faces as she drank in each of their scents.  She moved among them, even walking between the pretty brown does with varied shades of brown coats, and met each one of the female deer.    It was like watching a miracle unfold… Sura was beginning to believe that Neisha truly was a creature whisperer.

They spent the next half of an hour investigating one another, so to speak, before the does began to act restless.  Neisha looked around, somehow communicating with the deer in a way that Sura could never understand, and then she jumped forward with a start.  What happened next was even more amazing – Sura watched as the herd of does followed suit, leaping and springing into action right behind Neisha.  The moved through the groves, following the stunning white Tokota, and running together like a single unit – not the strange interspecies grouping of creatures that they were.  Sura watched with wonder…

Oh my God - I love how you draw deer. I've probably said that before but have it again. The herd of does looks so graceful and natural. The array of poses are wonderful and its a small thing, but even the variances in their colouring just add so much individuality to the picture as a whole. And you make them look so soft - like suede or velvet, actually, with the soft shine. They contrast so beautifully with your Toko, which really makes the picture stand out - there's a predator with a bunch of prey animals, and that's exactly the point. I love the story with all the deer just letting her walk up to them and join in. Its really interesting that Sura decides to stay back, too - adds a touch of depth to the concept that even Neisha can get close, but they'll still flee from a human. I really like that.

And whoa, what a background!! I know you always talk about mine, but WHY? Yours are gorgeous. The textures in the grass with the patches of sunlight and wildflowers are stunning and the trees look so thick and rich. The tiny bit of sky elevates it a bit and just breaks up the green and I really like the out of focus petals that make it feel more like a photograph. Its so well done. Amazing job.

Don't be too impressed.  I am horrible at arranging or planning my images... and often, as in this case, I end up sketching a bunch of separate characters and then use PS to merge them all together into one image.  I'm not familiar enough with cervine anatomy to draw multiples in one image.  So I end up doing things the long/slow way, and sketch them all separately prior to a photoshop merge.
I'm so delighted to hear you say that you think they ended up looking good together, framing Neisha as they run as prey-and-predator together (a Tokota prompt).
And thank you so much for saying so - but my backgrounds can't even begin to touch yours.  In fact, I often think to myself as I am painting them, "what would Rachel do" or how would she convey this?  So I really appreciate all your wonderful compliments.

But even sketching them all separately is freaking awesome - they all look gorgeous and that in itself takes talent and patience. I imagine you had to arrange them all and possibly resize and adjust to get them all looking like they fitted in. So its no less awesome. (I want that one at the back - the greyish one kicking up her hindlegs. She's my favourite So I'll just...*stuffs her in pocket and runs*)

Wow, really? That is a huge compliment. You really do great all on your own though. Maybe we have complimentary strengths - you're definitely great at making these rich, woody, summery scenes. I'm far better with just open grassy meadows XD. We could try and do another collab one day. Might be fun when we both have the time ^^

OMG, a collab with you would be so so much fun!

We'll definitely have to plan that for some time later this year.  I would love it.

Thank you so much hun!
I had a lot of fun with this (even if my deer kept wanting to look like horses, LOL).
I only have one more image to finish and then I can submit her for Dominance... it'll be the very first set of RoD's I've done for Tokos.  Yay for accomplishing milestones.
