Description Keira in the Equibreak November Challenge Show: What is Poultry?

After our Arabian foals met at a previous show, *Tattered-Dreams and I have talked about having their handlers, Ciara and Chess, meet up and go to a poultry market/auction together.  We've both thought about bringing assorted peafowl back to our respective stables (and that's still on my rather long to-do list).  My plan was to bring one Indian Blue peacock and one white peacock back to the stables, Artistik Arabians, and introduce them as part of the growing barnyard.
Note to self, must draw refs for both of these beautiful birds soon

But when I saw that %equiBREAK 's November challenge included poultry, I simply couldn't wait to show my dear little yearling and her introduction to one of the farm's new/strange creatures wandering through her pasture.  Here Keira, who is inquisitive and curious (and a little cautious), has come across the white peacock, as it struts across the grass, and is trying to figure out what to do with it.  Is it friendly?  Can it be played with?  Will it hurt her?  Curiosity has the best of her, and she is trying to figure out just what this odd creature is.

Is there anything you cannot draw? The peacock you drew is stunning!
I love how proud it looks there with its super poofy tail. What a beautiful creature!
Keira looks adorable young lady and I think you nailed her curious expression!

I also love how creatively you combined the challenge theme with your earlier plans of introducing the new barn member. ^^

Ah, thank you so much!

And LOL, yes there are plenty of things I can't draw (some days it even feels like everything).    But it means so much to hear you say that he looks stunning.  THANK YOU.  I'm quite happy with how he turned out.

And I had hoped to find time to properly introduce the peacocks (with a pretty ref image of the two of them), but when I realized I couldn't, I simply went ahead with the show entry.  It was too good of an opportunity to pass up.  Maybe now I'll actually find some time to get a proper introduction of these beautiful birds done.

Thanks so much for the hun.

My pleasure!

Looking forward to see these gorgeous birdies prancing on your stable yard in the future!
But I am glad one of them got a little head start from this challenge entry.

Beautiful!! Her face is so delicate and I am a sucker for albino peacocks <3 You've done a great job with Keira's expression-- she looks very surprised and interested with her shining eyes and flaring nostrils. Wonderful work!

I'm way behind on commenting on your art, but I will take a few minutes here to say a few things.

First, Keira just gets more beautiful the older she gets. Her longer mane and tail suit her so perfectly and I especially love how her tail's painted here. Her pose is adorable, and very expressive, too. And in the interest of rounded feedback, I'll also mention that her head and neck look ever so slightly too big for her body, but its minor and doesn't detract from the overall image

Second, I remember our conversations on the peafowl front and now I really want to draw my peacock XD

Third, that is a gorgeous peacock, right there! He's just stunning with all the white feathers everywhere, and he almost gives off an ethereal glow, because the shading is very subtle. You did an amazing job with that!

And lastly, the silvery backdrop with the muted blue-green grass gives an almost wintery feel that I really love (given we're on the verge of winter over here right now). You created something very atmospheric with very little - apparent - effort. Well done ^^

Ah, the fun of juggling a job, friends/family and our online time... just not enough hours in the day.  But you know with me, you never have to worry about replies or comments.  I get a little backlogged myself at times.  Eventually, we work our way around to all the messages/art... and I'm never in a hurry to get/give messages.  I take my time and wait until I can enjoy the art in my inbox.

That  being said, thanks so much for taking that time to leave me another awesome comment.

I'm so glad you think that she is growing into her looks well.  I'm glad you like the pose.  And thank you so much for the feedback on her proportions (which I can totally see now too).  I love how kind and helpful your comments always are.  Thanks.

As for your peacock, I would LOVE to see it!    I know you have a full schedule, but if you could work in your gorgeous bird... that would make my day to see that in my inbox!!!

And thank you for saying such nice things about mine.  I'm definitely gonna need some practice drawing their proportions and feathers, but glad that I finally got one on "paper" so to speak.

Oi, me and my backdrops.  Why I struggle with them so, I just dunno.  I was so frustrated with this one.  I must have chosen like 15 random greens in varying opacities to brush over each other.  So it makes me really happy to hear you say that this works - especially for the season (we're also on the verge of winter here).

Thank you so much for taking time to leave me that feedback, hun.  I really appreciate it.

Ah, I know! Its just mad This lack of time is really why I don't watch anyone on dA. I'd never have an empty inbox! So I just go to galleries as and when I want to,/have the time, and that seems to work for me

You're welcome for the comment, though! She's definitely growing beautifully, and I'm glad you find my schpiels useful ^^.

Haha, I'd dearly love to see my peacock, too (He's been designed in my mind for ages) but I just haven't had time to sort it out! There's so much I've ran out of time for this year! And now its Christmas and I still have to work out how I'm going to do presents... The peacock will make an appearance one day - I'd just be amazed if it came out as good as yours (my single previous attempt at one came out woefully tubby...) They do take a bit of practice, I think XD

Your frustration with the background doesn't show at all! Honestly, it just looks like an artistically subtle wintery setting - something you went for, rather than ended up with - and by accident is how some of the best art is made (I firmly believe) so good on you

Sorry for the hugely late reply, but you're welcome for the comment

As much as I really wanna be able to draw my ref pics for my two new peacocks, it will have to wait until after the New Year, as I just can't find the time right now.  I know what you mean about things being so busy.  But I do hope we get to see your beautiful new bird when things begin to slow down for you.  I can't wait to see what what design you've come up with!

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ReQuay [2013-12-02 17:43:32 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I'm thinking mine will have to wait that long, too. I am really excited to draw him, though, because I found a photo of a beautifully marked bird ages ago, and since then, I've known that's what I want. So really, I can't take full credit for the design (though I will be tweaking it to suit me), but how can you not want this? - 25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_md7… fav.me/d1z45nn fav.me/d2v7dzg

Glad you approve Yeah, I hope I get to do something soon - but prizes for the Halloween mini event, HFGF and TT have to come first, not to mention your foal art for the TBT event, a reference image for Indi, Christmas presents for friends and on top of that, a whole new horse that came to mind just yesterday and is demanding to exist. Shoot me

Hahaha, why is it when RL gets busy, our art lists get uber long too?     And you sound like you've def got a long list (take your time with the TBT results... I'm in NO hurry and my pretty boy isn't going anywhere).  I'm actually far more interested to hear about this new horse that is demanding to exist.  Do I get a vote, because now I want you to draw that one first... I'm dying to learn more about it!

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ReQuay [2013-12-03 22:34:03 +0000 UTC]

That is exactly how it works for me, too

Dear God! I haven't even drawn the Friesian I caved in and decided to get and already I have another hammering at my head.

She's an Arabian part bred grulla mare with the more brown tone, rather than blue (since grullas tend to have two distinct hues). Think like these: www.theequinest.com/images/gru… www.shirefoxfarm.com/sales/Jaz… vichorse.com/forum/index.php?t… . And possibly a face marking like this (though I'm not fully decided yet) shiningc.webs.com/1%20Beetle.j…

She's called Valkyrie, as in the female figures of Norse mythology who walk battlefields with the power to choose who lives and who dies. Her barn/nicknames names inclue 'Keery/Kyrie', 'Óskmey' which means 'wish girl' and Óski, meaning wish fulfiller. She's around 15 hands and beautiful but stand offish with most people and won't put up with being ridden the wrong way. She's very sensitive on an emotional and physical level, so if her rider grips a little to tight, or is a bit too nervy, she'll be in the air.

I'm toying with the idea of having her owner a very odd girl who's either a psychic or empath herself. I'd like to explore the kind of relationship an empathic link might allow between the two characters, but that would mean they don't get involved with Lakewood, because I like my Farm staying realistic.

Anyway...hopefully that's satisfied some of your curiosity

Oh my goodness, she sounds absolutely amazing.  I love the idea of a grulla colored partbred Arab.  And her name is so fitting as well.    The idea of toying with an empathic or psychic handler is actually quite intriguing.  I know that means the pair wouldn't be based out of Lakewood, but I think it would be so much to explore that fantasy element/relationship.    I definitely am excited to see what happens with Valkyrie now.

Tattered-Dreams In reply to ReQuay [2013-12-05 23:41:34 +0000 UTC]

Aww, thanks Yeah, I love my Arabians, but they don't carry dun, so she had to have something in her to get to grulla Her name is sort of what I started off with - I've wanted a horse called Valkyrie for a while and just not landed on a design I like enough. I might finally have done it

Empathy is one of my favourite supernatural abilities. I love the word, and the concept of it, not to mention is one with some terrible consequences, which is always more fun. And I'm reading a book at the minute around a family of psychics, so that's got my mind spinning on some kind of psychic or clairvoyant ability as a part of the empathy...my mind is a complex place at times XD.

Yeah, they'd be off on their own - not HARPG - but I would like to find time to give them a story one day I might try to get them drawn and see what reception's like But thank you for my first encouraging comment about them
