Description S'been awhile, hasn't it?

Well, I've been in a slump. Here's hoping it's over.

Here's my most recent sculpture. He needs to be painted and graced with a few accessories (bow tie, top hat, monocle), but until then, here he is in all his unpainted, accessory-less glory.

This guy is super sculpey (yeah, the pink stuff) mixed with black and white Premo, with an internal armature of wire, foil, and autoclave tape.

Will move this to scraps when he gets his final coat of paint.

this is amaZing. iT reminDs me oF those moDeLs in an Animator's Studio... you know, when the characters are being brought to life. From the look of this y0u are becoming quite the Sculptor. The details are finer than with the other sculpture i sAw from you.. more sophisticated than the bear. mmhh.m. like the Bear, this is a free--standing sculture. balance even with the stance that suggests to me that it would have the tendency to lean backwaRds.
did y0u give this sculpture a wire skeleton?

Aw, thanks!
I think I've improved a bit since the bear and learned a bit more about sculpting since I made him.

The langur isn't actually free-standing. Yep, he has a wire/foil skeleton, and I've attached that to the wooden base he's standing on. This guy would have been impossible to make otherwise, since he is a bit top-heavy and wouldn't have stood upright while cooking if he hadn't been securely drilled to the base.

You're welcome. I'm surprised--and also pretty disappointed--there isn't more of a response here. Your work looks professional quality and it keeps getting better.

Do you think you'd enjoy a profession that involves your artistic skill? i'm hoping that to have to do that for a living wouldn't suck the joy out of it.

I really love the detail in his fur!! I think the overall impressive part is the posture and that you managed to get him to stay that way!

Great to see you posting again chum

Thanks buddy!

The secret to his posture is all in the wires that are holding him up! He's actually drilled into the base you see him standing on--it meant he stayed extra stable and sturdy before being hardened in the oven.

Hope you like how he looks painted.

Hey, thanks! It's great to hear from you!

I'd sell them if folks would buy them, but people balk at the price I ask... I don't think it's unreasonable, but you know how it goes.

Materials are listed in the description, did you want to know more in additon to that? Let me know.

Depending on the size and complexity, anywhere from $200 and up for something this detailed. I spend a lot of time on these, and I think that's pretty reasonable.

You definitely should give sculpture a try! It is so rewarding and satisfying. I love drawing and painting, but sculpture has something that the other two are lacking.

I kinda think you should leave him unpainted. He's got a cool wrought-iron look to him. XD

Fannnntastic!

Thanks!

You're positive it's not gas? Better take some Gas-x to be sure. I distinctly heard some non-amorous rumblings from your neck of the woods.

Maybe it was the pot roast?

Oh man, top hat and monocle.

This will be the best monkey ever.

I hope so! That's quite a lofty goal... But monocles and top hats are pretty awesome.

That's so cool. I wish I had your art genes...I always fail sculpture things in art. It just ends up falling over and dying. I can do sand though, until it washes away.

rgyoung In reply to ComeSailAway [2005-09-09 05:56:28 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, girl!
The key to prevent the falling over and dying is to add some sort of internal skeleton.

Sand is sweet! Check out what Tibetan Monks do with it: [link]

They spend hours and sometimes days on these and then they dismantle them after completing them. Pretty amazing, huh?

ComeSailAway In reply to rgyoung [2005-09-09 15:24:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, last time I sculpted something in clay was 7th grade...and I think it did put some wire in it, but the clay was too heavy and it fell over.

I've seen the monk's sand things. This summer I made a cat and mouse for a contest and won a cake that looks like a sand castle. And it was yummy I have to post a picture of that soon.

rgyoung In reply to ComeSailAway [2005-09-29 03:53:23 +0000 UTC]

Ah, well, you should try again sometime--use some foil around the wire to cut down on the clay you use. It's super frustrating when that happens, huh? I cussed a blue streak the last time I had something destroyed by putting it in the oven.

Yes, post a photo of that, dangit!
