Description Wizards in tweed? Yes please.

From "The Science of Discworld III: Darwin's Watch", where the UU faculty wizards enter Roundworld once again, and this time, go Victorian.
I'm going to get around to adding the rest of the senior staff at some point, but for the moment there's a rather dapper Ponder, Rincewind ("who was rather edgy in the absence of his hat, and tried to stand under things"), and the Librarian, enjoying himself in a velvet suit and fake eyebrows. He is drinking Twinings Earl Grey tea of course (the nectar of the Gods to Yours Truly), and I have concluded that I can't draw orangutans :/

Inked in Toonboom and coloured in Photoshop

Great artwork! Ponder and the Librarian's outfits are very dapper indeed, while poor Rincewind looks like an extra from "Mary Poppins"...

Thanks to JessKat83, I was compelled to read the Science of Discworld trilogy, an' I gotta say that the third an' final book has to be my favourite.

The first book was, to me, mainly settin' the stage of the next two as well as once again displayin' the antics of the Head Wizards along with Rincewind's world-weary cynicism. An', of course, once again reinforcing the proclamation that the Luggage will follow its owner ANYWHERE.
The second an' third books focused on the Wizards fighting to protect their science project from the Elves an' from the Auditors.

Here, in this trilogy, is where I believe that Rincewind had his very best moments. In a strange and unknown world, he is at his best; usually with a bit of screaming. I consider him to be the real leader of the pointy-hatted group in the trilogy, though he himself would not have known it.

Thank you very much for creatin' this tribute to Pratchett's wonderful theory books. Here, in this image, are the three wizards in UU whom I consider to be the only ones with any real sense among all the dinner-obsessed, pointy-headed balloons.

Thankyou very much! They are a group of wizards (including, more or less, the ourangutan, who is actually a librarian) from the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett. In this book they get stuck in Victorian England whilst trying to save Roundworld (i.e Earth). As a fan I'm hugely biased, but anywhoo, if you like fantasy/comedy/great stories in general, CHECK THEM OUT!

Thankyou kindly for the fav and the comments!

rhianimated In reply to hunlin [2009-07-11 05:26:50 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much! Hehe, I figured that when the costumes were being handed out amongst the faculty, the senior Wizards would have grabbed the best things for themselves (heh, I loved that bit with the Dean dressing as a priest with a massive hat), and Rincewind would have been fobbed off with whatever was left over (in this case tweed slacks and a shabby vest), which is why he's not in a dashing suit and tophat as well. Although, that could be rather fun to draw too ....

The-French-Belphegor [2009-07-09 17:02:06 +0000 UTC]

You know, it's bad enough that reading Pratchett makes me want to hug Rincewind on a regular basis, but each and every one of your drawings featuring him just makes it so much worse Of course, he'd just run away very very very fast in the opposite direction. Ah well.

It's so hard to draw an orangutan without him looking like King Louie of Jungle Book fame, but you more than pull it off! I mean, really - I love the little glint his glasses give off. And the little finger. Poor not-designed-by-Nature-to-wear-a-beard Ponder looks just great, and Rincewind is... well, you've just got him. I might prefer yours to Paul Kidby's, maybe because yours looks more cartoonishly cuddly... Dunno He's all spindly and scrawny and miserable-looking and I love it.

One day I'll get my tablet-coloured pictures to look half as *clean*. I swear, the colours and shadows and everything, it's... What's Toonboom, by the way?

Anyway, in a nutshell, great drawing

rhianimated In reply to The-French-Belphegor [2009-07-11 05:20:51 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thanks so much!

Hehe, those were my only thoughts when thinking about the Librarian: 'must...not...make him look like King Louie!', who seems to be the definitive cartoon orangutan (and what brilliant design in that movie, too! *drool*).

Yeah, I think he'd probably be in a constant state of running away from hoards of fans if he were real And thankyou, that's quite a compliment! I have to admit Paul's will probably always remain the definitive interpretation to me; I think, because of my general style and because I like the character, I have a tendancy to draw him a bit too cartoonishly cuddly, and it bothers me sometimes, but oh well...I figure we've already got Paul's version, there's no use in me trying to match it so I might as well draw him the way I want to I love seeing different individuals' interpretations of the Discworld characters though, it's great!

Toonboom is kind of like Flash (i.e a vector-based animation program) but is more geared towards people who want to make character animation as opposed to graphics for web pages etc, it's a lot more recent than Flash. We use it at work and I love it; I only recently had the idea of using it to do my usually-wobbly tablet linework, and haven't looked back!

He's a very human character and that's what Paul Kidby brings out in him (most of the time).

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rhianimated In reply to hunlin [2009-07-11 04:58:59 +0000 UTC]

Is that the Librarian, or Rincewind who's very human? (Probably both, I guess!). But, I totally agree with you there; at our recent DW book club meeting we all did a little talk on our favourite characters, and someone asked why I liked Rincewind's personality given his other faults, and it's because of that fact; he's a lousy wizard, but he's a much more introspective and competent human being than the other wizards.
I love Paul Kidby's version of him - it was the first Discworld picture I ever saw and it will always remain the definitive one to me!

I found Darwin's Watch at a church book-sale for 50 cents (biggest 'GASP - MINE!!' moment I've ever had, the people looking at the same shelf didn't know what had hit them), but I think I had to search for the other two; I might have even had to resort to the internet.
