Terrible story time

“Hey! You put your head down here right now, or so help me…” Rory, on tiptoes, reached for the soft nose of the headstrong stallion, growling through her teeth as he fixed his eyes on the stable roof, ignoring her completely.

“Don’t make me get the box..Damnit Jareth, I thought we were getting along.” She sighed, dropping her arms and trying to rub the tension out of them. The champagne stallion dropped his head, turning to watch her with haughty eyes. Cocking a back hoof, he sighed in response, looking for all the world like butter wouldn’t melt. What are you doing? he seemed to say, Come on, we’ve got places to be…

“I’m starting to regret leaving Devi at home. Why do I have to pick such tall horses...” she murmured as she reached out of the stable for the tackbox which doubled as a stepping stool, quickly turning to shove the stallion in the chest as he tried to barge his way past her. She fondly thought of the tall, black stallion who’d carried her through their terrifying adventure to bring the Nordanners home to Aleria. Still, he wasn’t here and she had to work with what she had. Even if it didn’t want to work with her.

She stepped onto the box, reaching for her horse again, Jareth quickly pointed his nose to the ground, out of reach of her newly elevated position. Biting back some choice swear words, they repeated their little dance for a few more minutes before she practically jumped at his head. As soon as her hand touched his nose, the tall stallion submitted, happily accepting the bit and standing quietly as if he’d always been so perfectly mannered. She quickly finished tacking up, checking everything twice and grumpily feeding her mount a mint, before leading him towards the arena.

For the first few minutes, they fought. Jareth wanted to go one way, his rider another. He wanted to go as fast as equinely possible, she would rather not break her neck. Rory was beginning to think of turning in early, it wasn’t worth risking her and her horse over stubbornness. Approaching a wide, deep ditch, she asked him to slow and think about his footing. Instead, he thrust his head high and bolted, snorting and straining with effort and refusing to answer any aides. Unable to see, they almost fell into the ditch at breakneck pace, it was only Rory managing to heave his head round and get his attention that saved them.

Jareth managed to take off just in time, but slipped slightly on landing, scrabbling madly for purchase. Leaning as far forward as possible, she shouted encouragement at her mount, supporting him but giving him the freedom to find his balance. It felt like moving through thick honey, but eventually he stood with all four hooves on the ground, snorting and huffing. She stroked and patted his neck, soothing and calming; he felt like bundled dynamite.

Walking him in a circle, he moved out soundly, seemingly more aggravated than shaken by their experience. They picked up a smooth canter, and although she was expecting another explosive burst, he accepted her speed restrictions with little complaint. He still felt ready to explode at any minute, but it seemed as though he was beginning to trust her judgement a bit more. Feeling him respond well, Rory relaxed slightly, not quite trusting him fully yet, but willing to allow more than before.

They didn’t become a magically connected pair after one sticky situation, but starting to trust his rider was a great start. They still argued occasionally throughout the course, but sometimes they connected completely; it was those times they felt like they were flying.
