Description 01:30 – Signs of panic begin to appear among some passengers on the ship. As port side boat no. 12 is lowered with 75 people, including Fifth Officer James, a group of passengers appears ready to jump into the already nearly full boat, and James fires shots into the air to warn them away. Serenity's distress calls are now near desperation: “We are sinking fast. Women and children in boats. Cannot last much longer.”

01:35 – Port side boat no. 14 is lowered with over 50 people. Starboard boat no. 13 leaves with 64 people, mostly second and third class women and children. Starboard boat no. 15 is launched thirty seconds later with 70 aboard and barely avoids collision with boat 13. The latter pulls away in the water in the nick of time. Reserve boat B overturns whilst being deployed to the boat deck and attempts to right it are unsuccessful.

01:40 – Most of the boats have now been lowered and passengers begin to move towards the rising stern. Hackney leaves on reserve C which moves away with 39 people aboard. Serenity's fo'c'sle is now awash.

01:45 – The last words from Serenity are heard by the Caronia on her way to the rescue. “...Engine room flooded up to boilers...” Port side boat no. 6 is lowered and leaves with only 25 people. She can carry 80. Reserve E is launched from the starboard side with only 34 people on board.

01:55 – John Fitzwilliam, refused entry to starboard side boat no. 11 by Second Officer MacDonald, sees his wife off safely as the boat is lowered with 40 women and children, with some crew aboard. In the rush, some 40 places on the boat are left empty. The last boat to be launched from the port side, no. 4, leaves with only 52 people whilst reserve D on the starboard side escapes with another 35.

02:00 – Water is now only ten feet below the upper promenade deck.
