Description As the three crew members walked across outer surface of the primary hull with Captain Dhruva, they were all too aware of the special privilege it represented. Such EVAs were usually limited to vital repairs or large, ceremonial gatherings. In either case participants are there for a purpose, not to sightsee. But these walks, virtually naked to the stars, was the Captain’s prerogative. His personal time for solace and to replenish the sense of wonder that drove him to his career.

Since their shared three-weeks’ ordeal with the Gorn on Bowman-8, the three crewmen had developed a special bond with the Captain. They’d lost count how many times they’d saved each other’s lives in that time. So the Dhruva extended them an invitation to join him in his unique stargazing job benefit. Thus Lieutenant Ralston, Ensign Eeeaapp, and Lieutenant Commander I-Ben Itaar found themselves striding across Old Duraniumsides’ upper surface with their path illuminated from the glow of their environment belts.

As they approached the edge of the ship’s giant disc, Eeeapp joked that the four of them should consider forming the official U.S.S. Constitution Astronomy Club. The sparkle that resulted in the Captain’s eye could only mean that the notion struck a chord with his quirky sense of Star Fleet decorum. Little did the cetacean Ensign realize what his quip would ultimately hatch.

This is one of those ideas that came to me as I laid in bed half asleep in the morning. Many of my Trek images have developed organically, with me having no idea what I’d be creating until I loaded up a model and started spinning the camera around. But like “Putting in for Repairs”, this is one of those few pre-planned projects.

Enterprise by Aggi (Poser conversion by Celticarchie [link] ), Shuttlecraft by XCal-Pro, starfield a composite of Bechvucny and Hubble images, Starfleet uniform textures by JamesJAB. Rendered in DS3, finished in Photoshop.

What's with the dolphin? Is that some one from.... what's-his-face Hwii?.... Hwii's species?

Hwii was a cetacean alien who was described as a dolphin floating in a sort of bubble of water on a hovering pad. It was in the "Dark Mirror" novel.

I'm amazed that you know about/remember the "life support belts" that we saw in Star Trek: TAS. Almost NOBODY I know, even most of the more "serious" fans, even know that there was an animated series.

(I'm not much better, I once had it all on my computer - and then the hard drive died! But at least I watched a number of episodes before it happened!)

Well I watched in my impressionable youth when it was broadcast, so the details are burned into my brain

I thought it was a pretty innovative thing, as well as the fact that the show established that yes, Kirk *did* have a primitive Holodeck type room ("The Practical Joker (TAS)") long before TNG came along and established the Holodeck as most fans know it! It kind of justifies the appearance of holographic chambers that the NX-01 crew encountered in "Enterprise" if Kirk had a Holodeck by the late 2260s.

Quite the opposite, in fact. I've now trained it to sit, beg, and fetch (planets)!

Of course when it brings 'em back, they look rather like a Golden Retriever's tennis ball....

Max* you were supposed to bring back the tennis ball, ugh, doggie spit slimy thing, oh wait, this is the tennis ball...it's just a Transformer and you made it transform into a shredded tennis ball. Clever boy!

RobCaswell In reply to Patriot1776 [2010-10-15 22:39:21 +0000 UTC]

They were mentioned in his Next Gen Enterprise-D blueprints. So... I guess it makes them sorta-kinda-quasi canon. But I don't think they ever appeared on screen and certainly may have fallen out of favor, since.

Well Sternbach kinda threw dolphins into semi-canon with his Enterprise-D blueprints, so there's a precedent of sorts. But that said, I'm a big Uplift fan

I love the dolphin - I hope his shirt doesn't itch!

David Brin wrote some great stories about a starship with a human/cetacean crew. I think the dolphins were the brains of the operation, they made great space navigators since they're fully accustomed to full 3D movement.
