Description "I suppose it's useless to tell you to leave."

"I wouldn't miss this for anything."

"It's your funeral."

"Already had one!"

Following the Vietnam War, superheroes were on the decline in America, which helped contribute to the bulging peak of crime waves that swept across the United States from the 1970s through the 1980s.  For many, it was seen as an age of darkness, but when all hope seemed lost, the people of Gotham City, NJ, finally got themselves a new savior who could take on the rampant crime and corruption: Batman.  At the same time, Superman made his first debut in Metropolis, NY, when he uncovered Lex Luthor's plot to sell his new LexoSuit mech-suit to the president of Yugoslavia illegally, and between these two, they really set off the superhero renaissance of the late 1990s and early 2000s.  When Clark Kent was first starting out as Superman, most people at the time thought of Batman as a raving lunatic.  It wasn't until 2001, however, when the two heroes actually met for the first time.

When the Joker and Harley Quinn stole a Chinese dragon statue made of solid Kryptonite, Batman immediately knew where the Clown Prince of Crime would strike next.  Using a business collaboration between Wayne Enterprises and LexCorp as a cover, Batman expected to run into Superman along the way, but their first meeting was a rocky one.  Superman didn't approve of Batman's methods for interrogating criminals about the Joker, and the two both learned about each other's secret identities as well.  However, when Joker kidnapped Lois Lane and nearly killed Superman with half of the Kryptonite at a LexCorp lab, the Dark Knight was able to rescue the Man of Steel from being poisoned to death by destroying the Kryptonite with hydrochloric acid.  Ultimately, the two were able to deduce that Luthor and Joker were in cahoots with one another, and decided to work together to stop the Clown Prince of Crime, especially when he decided to hold Luthor hostage, and destroy everything he ever built - half of Metropolis!  Luckily, the two heroes were able to save Metropolis and Luthor, putting an end to Joker's schemes in Metropolis.  Yet this also was the start of a good friendship between the two.

So, for the poses that Superman and Batman are in, I decided to base it off of Ed McGuiness' cover of Superman/Batman Public Eneimes, mainly because, to paraphrase Bruce Timm: "It's like they took the art from Batman: The Animated Series, and injected it full of steroids".  I also chose that for reference mainly because it makes them look very dynamic, like they're about to face off an army of supervillains.

Since Clark and Bruce know each other's secret identities, that also technically gives Batman an advantage, in that he knows of Superman's weaknesses, which is why he keeps a chunk of Kryptonite in a lead container in a vault within the Batcave. As a result, Batman has been able to get Superman out of tight situations, such as when Joker, Luthor or Metallo use Kryptonite on him.  Additionally, there were instances of vice-versa.  For instance, in 2006, when the Justice League was stopping the Thanagarian invasion force from destroying Earth, Batman guided the Watchtower manually towads the bypass generator, and it was Superman who managed to get him out in time, just before the Watchtower made impact.

In both their civilian identities and superhero personas, Bruce and Clark are almost like brothers in a sense.  In the aftermath of Darkseid's first invasion of Earth, Superman presumed that while Earth was under the protection of New Genesis, Darkseid would still try and invade again at some point.  To that end, he entrusted Batman and Catwoman with a motherbox with coordinates preset to New Genesis, so as to enlist the aid of Darkseid's own son, Orion.  In 2004, the two met again when parademons placed motherboxes all over the United States in an invasion led by Darkseid's uncle, Steppenwolf.  Superman went into one of the boom tubes which he presumed led to Apokolips, only to be ambushed by Brainiac and Darkseid.  In reaction, Batman and Catwoman implemented the contingency to recruit Orion's help, and saved Superman in the process, while Martian Manhunter, Captain Marvel, Wonder Woman, Green Lanterns Hal Jordan, Boodikka and Kilowog, the Flash and Cyborg forced Steppenwolf back into his own boom tube.  Soon after, this led to the formation of the Justice League of America, with Superman as the team's leader, and Batman as a part-time member.

When Superman was supposedly killed at the hands of Darkseid's failed living weapon, Doomsday, Batman had a hunch that Clark wasn't really dead, and only attended the funeral from afar.  When he came up with no leads on Clark's whereabouts, Bruce admitted that despite their differences, he had nothing but respect for Clark, as he taught Bruce that justice doesn't always have to strike from the shadows.  Nevertheless, he was right in that Doomsday didn't kill Superman at all, but only injured him severely.  By 2008, when Lex Luthor, as president, tried to frame Superman for killing Metallo, and with a Kryptonite asteroid heading for Earth, Superman and Batman teamed up once more, clearing the Man of Steel's name, impeaching an insane Luthor from the Oval Office, and destroying the asteroid.  Yet sometimes, they do have their disagreements.  Shortly after the asteroid's destruction, Kara Zor-El, Superman's teenage cousin finally landed on Earth.  While Superman was glad to finally have a living blood relative with him on Earth, Batman was extremely distrustful of her, mainly because she couldn't control her powers, and that made her a loose cannon in his book.  Yet the two were able to agree on having Kara train with the Teen Titans, and even joined them in rescuing her from Apokolips.
