Hey Rob, just wondering about your methods when painting still lives; do you make up the backgrounds or do you paint your subjects in their background as it appears?

A little of both. I try to set up what I want as closely as I can, but it often ends up being approximate and I change things a bit such as in this one. The objects were on a pedestal, against a wall. I didn't like the composition of the shadows where the fabric fell off the pedestal at the left. Instead, probably with moderate success, I made it a soft corner.

Very impressive. It looks so real, like a photo, but it's not

I am so impresed I can hardly believe it is hand painted. I have the same jasmine tea in my home, and it looks exactly like this one, the dragon fly plus the seeds thing (dont know the english word for it) adds so much to it, it fills the emptyness and it doesnt leace the main object floating.

hmmm love that tea! have the exact same one
i like the dragonfly really neat but i feel like it needs to pop out more, it gets lost too much -i don't know if it got lost when you scanned/took photo for the computer version..

I thought that tea (at least the batch that I had) over-brewed and got bitter too easily, but it's a beautiful tin and it couldn't have been that bad because I did drink it all.
I agree on the dragonfly. I think it's a little better in the actual painting, but I do think I should have made it a little easier to see.

it not the brand but jasmine tea, you need to take the tea leaves off the water after a short time, or it'll get bitter i usually put a very small amount of leaves, it also gets over-brewed if you put a handful lol tea lessons XD
nonetheless its a beautiful painting

I really like this. The dragonfly's a nice touch I've got a strainer with a dragonfly at the end, so kudos there! But otherwise, I like some of the touches where the objects blend out into the background.
