how waterproof are these antlers? i'm planning on making these, but they'll be mostly worn outside in (maybe) rain.

There are spray paints that are clear and made specifically to seal and protect from weather. Like you can go to Walmart or something and look for any spray paint cans that say "clear" "sealant" "matte or gloss" "weather proof". Any of those would work really. Sorry for the super late response, good luck!

Hi there! I'm making several pairs of antlers for a group faun cosplay (SO excited). I'm having a difficult time shaping the wire...do you have any suggestions on making this easier?Β

If the wires are too thick you will have a harder time shaping them. The shapes, curves, symmetry is suuuuuper tricky no matter how talented one may be. All I can suggest is having a reference, picture or a literal detached antler. If you can't seem to get it to work, don't be afraid to ask for help.

Wow, I hadn't expected you to respond since this was submitted so long ago! I eventually got the shaping to work with a lot of wrist work and a little Ibuprofen at the end. Thank you so much, and have a happy new year!

Would it be possible for me to make moose antlers with these instructions [I want them for a Supernatural cosplay: Sam!Demon!Moose]

Okay, that sounds freaking amazing, I wish you luck! The base shape and spikes would work with this, I would suggest using cardboard or something light/sturdy for the wide flat area of the antler. I've been meaning to experiment with moose antlers, I just haven't gotten around to it.

I was wondering if I could use that larger blue tape (its usually used for painting walls) instead of masking tape

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

root-for-theUNDERDOG In reply to fangirlariffic [2014-05-16 03:30:13 +0000 UTC]

It should work, if it's wide you might need to tear it into thinner strips for less bumps in the end result.

Broxsh [2013-02-13 12:38:41 +0000 UTC]

Could you use air dry clay instead of the paper mΓ’che wih the wall paper glue? For the horns I'm making I need the tips of the deer horns to be very pointy.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

root-for-theUNDERDOG In reply to Broxsh [2013-02-13 20:22:24 +0000 UTC]

You could use the clay just on the tips of the horns, but whatever you do, do NOT cover the entire antler with the clay. Even with the wire set up to keep it in place, it wobbles around, if you use air dry clay, they will fall and take your wig with it! So try just using some on the tips of the antlers over the paper mache and sanding it down or something.

Oh sweet! This is really useful... I was thinking of doing some antlers for a Skyrim costume, was thinking papier mache but wasn't sure what to put inside of it for the strength... thanks for this!

Skyrim, bad ass :] Yeah, some props can be tricky, but never be shy, ask other cosplayers what they used. And no problem, I'm glad it was helpful!

Agreed! My experience has always been that once I nail one technique for one prop/weapon, the next project is something totally different that old techniques won't work for >D That's why people who make tutorials are awesome!
