Description
The place where Aippaq was born was burning.
The water boiled. The cave shook. The cavern walls echoed a horrible, horrible scream that soothed itself into a lullaby in an instant. The room was void of air and Arnlaug found herself gasping for it with lungs that had never taken their breath in the first place. The ice had melted and the water stood still and in the middle of it all was fire never-ending, always burning, always humming a tone not made for mortals to understand. The voice of Aippaq, some had said in the village not so far from this cave in the middle of the mysterious mountains – this was a sacred place of Birth of Her and the echo of Her still lingered in the water for what was meant for only the bravest, the most capable.
Agabus had been so, so brave. Always so ready to throw himself into action, between her and the hard case, between anything – that was his soul. Ferocious strength boiled in his veins as they had made the long journey to the Soul Pool that would mark his destiny if only Her would will it.
Arnlaug had stood behind when Agabus had approached the pool. The water was so still Arnlaug had mistaken it for ice – but as Agabus had took the final step to reach the waterline, it had suddenly hummed once. The ripples had ran from his front paws to the back of the cave that seemed to continue endlessly to the unseen.
The tokota had stared the water that reflected nothing but the ominious light from underneath the surface. There was no pair of eyes of his own to meet Agabus’ gaze as the male had turned his head back to the handler. They had stared for a while in complete silence when Arnlaug finally gave a nod – and as Agabus steeled himself, the tokota pressed his face closer to the still water and drank.
And he drank. And drank.
And as he lifted his head, his whole body was thrown to the water like something else had willed it and not Agabus himself. Arnlaug had felt a jolt in his veins as the handler almost threw herself after the Firstborn – anything else would be okay but not to lose this one. Never this one.
But then the lullaby had started and Arnlaug had seen how Agabus had opened his eyes and jaws to a scream that wasn’t as loud as it was heartbreaking. The tokota was in pain but just mentally – whatever was controlling him now wasn’t him anymore.
And then the water had started burning and an image had swirled itself around Agabus and almost swallowed his image whole. The screaming had stopped; he only breathed slowly as the unknown powers had forced him to stand on his hind legs.
The fire contained itself to only to be a ring around the tokota when Arnlaug could finally breathe properly and face the reality unfolding before her. The flames were forming a clear image that even Arnlaug could witness – the roaring hum of a bear flashed before her eyes before vanishing inside Agabus like it had always belonged there. A part of the painful light escaped and danced around him before moving out from the roof through of a hole that had parted in it; like the rocks themselves had made the will of Her happen.
Agabus collapsed but only just when he had landed on the shore again. The waters were cold and dark again; the fires and flames had vanished leaving nothing behind. But as Arnlaug soothed Agabus with slight caress, she felt the pulsating light around them, calling them, in him.
The soul of the Bear.

Chosen soul animal: Bear
Prompt (copy pasted from this journal): 9. Your tokota is nearing the end of their quest to dominance and they make a final stop to visit an elder shaman or elder tokota (any of the original starters.) They are instructed to make a journey to the cave where the spiritual waters of the Soul Pool can be found, where Aippaq is said to have taken its first breath. Drinking from the waters will reveal the animal most closely to their soul, the bear.
