Description EVOLUTIONARIES
(Part of my 'TRANSHUMANISUM' series)

10" X 10" - Acrylic on birch wood panel
Completed 12/09/2008 - Los Angeles

In the near future people will be able to decide how they evolve. Evolution will be taken from the hands of nature and we shall control what we become through science and technology. Breakthroughs such as nano technology and A.I., ([link] ) will enable us to transcend the slow pace of human evolution exponentially.

This may result in several and varied evolutionary variations. Some may choose to have extremely strong and large bodies like giant insects, while others may decide to become small and invisible like a floating energy. Nanobots, ([link] ) and utility fog, ([link] ) will make the physical world and many of it's laws absolute.

Until we are able to control ALL THINGS, (in which case it is conjectured that we have become god, and fulfilled human destiny) we will be limited in the changes we can make to ourselves. This could be an amazing period where we make ourselves into our own 'Art Forms' as different and varied as snowflakes.

In this possible world, People will transcend the physicality of eons of intelligence and physical evolution in an amazing short period of time, (see The Singularity, [link] ).

There may be those who will rebel against what they see as "ungodly' modifications of the accepted human form, (see Luddites, [link] ).

Early adopters of modification and augmentation technologies may be termed "EVOLUTIONARIES".

Interesting, I wonder what exactly the modifications that these people underwent are? Are they purely cosmetic, are they functional? Who knows.

They still look normal compared to the Death-Caps.

Actually I take that back. The Death-Caps look extremely weird, but these people look a lot more surreal.

A very interesting concept, one we are already implementing on a smaller scale with other organisms. I love the translucency in this painting. It's something I've always admired in your work and you seem to be increasing in your mastery of creating odd reflections and see-through subject matter.

...one wonders though, if, after achieving such a level of perfection, we would eventually be freed from want and boredom, and simply fall asleep for the rest of eternity (or "die"; that works too). We would become a system without a voice, much like the "nature" that we took reality's laws from.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

RSConnett In reply to Silkeyn [2008-12-21 23:04:01 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it's possible. Perhaps that is our fate. (if one believes in fate) We become nature, and spawn new life which evolves again into nature, and on and on ...??

Silkeyn In reply to RSConnett [2008-12-22 20:26:02 +0000 UTC]

Lol, wouldn't it be hillarious if "god" was a result of that very cycle?

Those must be nanobots floating in the background. Transhumanism was brought to my attention a couple of years ago but I have yet to actually research it. I like how you get inspired and produce beautiful pieces based on really interesting subject matter. You really know how to extrapolate a concept visually while keeping it personal....triple kudos for you

Mr. Connett,

I'm really enthused with this painting as you've introduced a whole new world of possibilities to me. I wasn't familiar with most of the technology you mentioned (thanks for the links) and the possibilities are intriguing.

The link on "utility fog" was particularly interesting and it's a shame that both Crichton and Vonnegut passed too soon the see their fiction come to life.

RSConnett In reply to Decarabia69 [2008-12-12 01:28:56 +0000 UTC]

cool! I'm glad I could do that. Now, let's live long enough to live forever, (that's a Ray Kurzwiel quote)

Decarabia69 In reply to RSConnett [2008-12-12 18:29:02 +0000 UTC]

I'll do my best and will urge you too as well. As Keith Richards (I believe the original quote was his) once said, "If I'd have known I was going to live this long, I'd have taken better care of myself."

I hope your show in Florida was successful and wish you and your friends and family a happy holiday season.
