Description An expansionist United States, having just defeated the Confederacy in the Civil War, look to expand northwards and the expense of Britain. To do this they purchase Rupert's Land from the Hudson Bay Company, split British North America in two. This, as intended, angers the British and Anglo-American relations take a sharp downward turn. For practical administrative purposes, Britain creates the new colony of 'Ursalia' from British Columbia and the North-West Territories, although this is only intended as a 'temporary' measure until Rupert's Land is regained from the US. In the meantime, the hostility between Britain and the US is being channelled into a 'biding war' for Alaska, which the Russian Tsar has put up for sale.

Different shades of red indicate different British colonies.

I don't still have the original file, so can't easily tweak it unfortunately. I could look at doing a remake though if you want to send me a note?

This would be a very intriguing scenario indeed!

What I'd like to see is a map based on Nathaniel Banks's Annexation Bill of 1866 and how that would have evolved into the present day.

While realistically I don't think the Bill had much chance of being passed and was more a political move to win Irish-American votes, I will have a go at it!

The thing is the Hudson Bay Company may have sold it to Canada, but that was more... well to put it this way. Westminster still has to put the rubber stamp on a deal like that, they wouldn't...unless Britain itself was strapped for cash, in which case it still has peaceful relations with the US. Maybe they thought a disaster is war with a French Empire that controls Europe.

I'd be interested in seeing a similar map:
-Our timeline US
-Nova Scotia (our timeline Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island)
-Ottawa (Toronto Peninsula up to Lake Nipissing/Mattawa River/French River)
-Quebec
-East Quebec (From the Saguenay River east)
-Columbia (Our timeline British Columbia from 49° TO 52°)
-North Michigan (Our timeline Upper Peninsula and the rest of the Ontario of this map), and then just 'Michigan' to its south.
-Alaska Territory

Possibly showing the south:
-South California (37° south, including the Baja Peninsula)
-Rio Grande (our timeline's Republic of the Rio Grande
-Arizona (with a border at 31° N to give it a port, sharing the latitude New Mexico)
-Sonora/Chihuahua - either 1 state, 2 states split at the crest of the Sierra Madre, or the same borders as our timeline, called East/West Sonora or something appropriate.

That'd give another 10 or so states.

Newfoundland Island would remain British.

Where does "Ursalia" come from??

rubberduck3y6 In reply to KantiaCartography [2012-12-22 20:52:50 +0000 UTC]

It's from Latin 'ursus' which means 'bear', so 'Ursalia' is faux Latin for 'Land of the Bear'.

The (Tsar) Russian Government would have been very unlikely to sell it to the British Empire right after the war they just had, which they were and decided to sell it to America in our time-line instead, to anger the British Empire and aside from the fact that they were going broke. The Hudson-Bay company evaluated the land of Rupert's territory at about $15 million (the starting bid for Alaska), so the US treasury would not have had enough money to finance an Alaskian purchase of that size. However, most payments were made in other assets such as Locomotives when Alaska was purchased, so i'm guessing that would still be negotiable (as the railway industry had a bigger market) and that they needed them, additionally, the Russian's would have most likely dropped the price for the American's to buy it, since the cost of maintaining Alaska were dramatically increasing. The population of British Columbia at the time saw a rise in American's at the time, so I'm guessing a possible accession of Ursalia (British North-West and British-Columbia) as well.
It seems like an extremely possible eventuality.

I thought that the Russians origionally offered to sell Alaska to the British because the growing population of British Columbia increased the chance of Alaska being invaded if war broke out again? And that the British rejected it because they didnt need Alaska because they already had a pacific coast along British Columbia? That part I might be wrong about

Did they use any of the money from the Alabama Claims? Did the Russians decide to wait to decide which of the two to sell Alaska to or dangle it for an alliance?
