If your talking about the in-take's, those are protective pads that i call "plugs" to protect from the effects of weather. This plane was my dream to fly...damn lymphnodes.

I read somewhere that the official description of that paint color was [a long Federal Stock Number I can't remember] Indigo Blue.  The one I saw at the USAF Weapons Museum sure looked black, even in full sunlight.  Perhaps in the light of a nuclear explosion it's blue.

Indigo blue? Talk about odd. "Real" indigo is nowhere near black in colour.
But yeah, maybe if a nuclear bomb goes off, it'll appear blue.

What I'd like to see are the two tone versions, the ones that are silver and black.
I dunno if there are any left, they may have all been painted solid black.

Ive alwayes wondered. Why the hell are the engines Red?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Russian-Fox In reply to The-Last-Dragon-Kni [2011-07-17 02:17:15 +0000 UTC]

They're not. Those red things are GSD covers installed over the intakes and at the exaust outlet. GSD stands for Grit, Sh*t, Debris.

Basically, they keep dirt, grime, etc out. And since this Blackbird is a display machine, it keeps birds and rats out of the engines.

Ya our super expensive plane was taken down my a chicken in the intake

Russian-Fox In reply to The-Last-Dragon-Kni [2011-07-18 04:22:02 +0000 UTC]

I dunno if a bird strike could take down a Blackbird in flight. The opening is fairly small...odds are the bird would hit the shock cone before it went into the intake. Plus, the engines are incredibly strong and resilient; because of the Blackbird's Mach 3.2 performance, the engines need to be built tougher than normal so as to handle the higher stresses and temperatures. The engine is almost all titanium and steel, so a bird strike might not do too much to it.

Plus...a bird strike could only happen at the lower altitudes. Up where the Blackbird normally flies, 82,000 feet, birds are not a threat because of a biological impossibility for them to get that high.
