Description …maybe I should stick to states. (*´∀`*)

I’ve always admired this lovely lady's Saint Lucia OC, and have wanted to make a Caribbean Island OC ever since. I was having a hard time deciding which island I wanted to make - mainly because 99.9% of my OCs have ties to Britain or France. I wanted a change for once, but I should have figured the two former nations had swooped in and taken over all the islands (save for one, which was adopted by the Netherlands).

So! As you can see, her human name is Joan Marie. I had a hard time finding common names in Grenada - this is all I could come up with. Hopefully it works.
Outside of spices, Grenada is a leading producer or oranges, thus the orange blossoms in her hair. It's where Joan works and gets the blossoms in the first place.
Her hair itself is frizzy and rather hard to tame, but by lifting it into a ponytail and dunking it in water, she manages to keep it decent.
Often times (though I didn't draw it), she wears bandanas on her head with simple, breezy dresses.

In the beginning, Grenada was inhabited by its indigenous people, the Island Caribs (Kalinago). At the time, these people called their island Camahogne.
Its first sighting was in 1498, during Christopher Columbus' third voyage to the new world. Spaniards were not the first to attempt settlement however; the English tried and failed years later in 1609.

However, on March 17, 1649, a French expedition of 203 from the island of Martinique (led by Jacques du Parquet) established a permanent settlement on Grenada. Shortly after this stirred conflict between the French settlers and the Kalinago until 1654 when the island was subjugated by the French. The Kalinago that had survived either escaped to neighboring islands or hid in the more remote parts of Grenada.

During the Seven Years' War (specifically in 1792), Britain captured the French-owned island, but it was not formally ceded to Britain until 1793, when the Treaty of Paris was signed. Determined to piss off the Britons, as always, the French re-captured Grenada during the American War of Independence via the land and naval Battle of Grenada in July of 1779.
BUT because France is a loser of the Treaty of Versailles of 1783, Grenada AGAIN became a British colony. Poor girl must have felt like a ping-pong ball at the time.
In 1877 Grenada was announced a Crown Colony.

Ahnn...that's all I got for now. I read the entire history ([link] ) but I have yet to write it out in my own words! I'll finish this soon.

You could have used DeRiggs as her name. It's actually my mom's name but it seriously feels like there are hundreds of us (there are a lot related by marriage). But the family's so big a lot of us don't know each other. Then, since we came from Portugal, it's taken from 'Riggs'. However, most every DeRiggs you meet will be from Grenada... Or you could just use Marie.

Great drawing!! ^___^
