EDIT/Artist's Note: I made this back in June when one of the trailers was released as a crack!theory. Please don't go posting spoilers in the comments, thanks guys!
So Lyric mistakes Sonic in his introduction for someone else. Someone from 1000 years ago. Wonder who thatβll be, hmm?
This isnβt really a solid theory on my part, this whole thing was mostly done for practice and fun. Also, Happy 23rd Birthday, Sonic XD

I never thought of this! what if THIS is really what Lyric saw! like everyone always thinks Shadow is Sonic so it would make sense...but the question is...what really happened? why would he hate this Shadow Ancient? or did this, "Ancient guy" that looks like Shadow, catch him in the past and let the other Ancients know about his plan? That would have been better if they had made the story like this! Shadow would have a bigger role in the game other than being annoying towards Sonic's team

I actually ascribe to the headcanon that G.U.N. intentionally framed Sonic in order to cover their own asses. I mean, Shadow getting out is a huge F*ck-up on their part and at the center of so many things they've covered up: Illegal weapons research, the massacre on the ARK (killing both scientists and civilians indiscriminately), the unlawful imprisonment of Gerald Robotnik (at which point they forced him to CONTINUE the illegal research until the day he died in their custody), and now their "living weapon" that they can't control, knows all of this after having lived through it first-hand and could easily expose all of these atrocities. What better way to cover their own asses than to frame the most famous hedgehog in the world. Whether people believe it or not, they'd certainly be distracted.

This should've been canon. The story they had in the game was...rather unnecessary...as was Shadow. This version would've given him something to actually DO in the game, and explain why he was even involved.

Since Shadow's gonna be in the game, I honestly wouldn't be surprised if this were the case. I mean, look at all the mistaken identity in Sonic Adventure 2, when Shadow was first introduced to us. I swear, the whole population of the Sonic universe really needs to get their eyes checked. .-.

Ah haha looks like Sonic's the only one with a scarf. It makes sense, I suppose. Making their designs too much alike would confuse things. I'm still interested to see how he'll be involved in the games and what his new backstory will be.
