Description Boredom has overcome paranoia. Let's just get this egg business over with.

This is what I did for half my eight-hour art exam (four hours, if you like). The other half I'll upload at some later point when I'm not supposed to be revising for chemistry (which is tomorrow morning, incidentally. But if I have to describe the mechanism for nucleophilic substitution once more I think I'll spontaneously combust. I'm not very kinetically stable, you see. I fact, I'm not stable at all.... *ahem*).

Anyway, there are a plethora of ways to 'interpret' this and I'm not going to put down any of them. It speaks for itself, I think.

Oil paints on canvas. Oh, and acrylics for the background, because I couldn't (this time around) wait all day for it to dry. I can't remember the exact dimensions; some strange size between A1 and A2.

i'm so happy to have time to look at this one. i was hoping it was what it appeared to be, and so it is. after so much studying of the egg carton, to finally do something of substance with the shape. i'm quite happy for you.

Oh my goodness! I have found another egg-lover! Yeay! So far there are not many artists I have found on DA that have moer than 3 works with eggs in them.. Anyways, I love this concept, as well as the concept of the whole 'series'. I had a look at it all! There is only one thing to say about this: Yeay! Keep up the good work! And if you would like to, I invite you to join my club ~The-Egg-Club Unfortunately it is very tiny yet because of the small percentage of egglovers on DA.

Oh dear. How can that be the case, I wonder? Aren't eggs truly the most wondrous of wonderful things in this wonderful world?

It was fairly random, to be honest. I don't really have an egg fetish, although they are some of the most aesthetically pleasing objects around.

Anyhow, thanks. And sure. And you can use any of my pieces as long as you tell me which you're uploading first.

I do believe they are the most wonderful thigns, yes! Well.. not entirely.. but among them!
These works were just so cool!

However, if I am going to upload them to the club, you have to accept to the invitation, and sent the club notes with the works you wnt submitted.. it is not a zine..

Here, I see eggcellent work. (God forgive me for the horrid puns.) I'm not entirely sure just how to interpret it, but for me, it's like...well, I suppose the best way to describe it is by comparing it to an actual eggbox: when it's torn in half, the eggs are still good, but the box is lifeless and destroyed. Maybe, maybe the egg represents life in a lifeless world. Even though the egg itself is lifeless, unfertilized, it still has potential for greatness. And, if prepared correctly, will make one hell of an omlette.

I was a painter, not one that dabbed on brick or wood, but an artist, and for my age was rated pretty good. Then, I discovered, you don't need dexterity to write poetry, and, here we are. But thank you; I've been told my bullshit skills are well developed indeed. ^_^

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

salmonofdoubt In reply to lateralsnowflake [2006-06-16 20:26:28 +0000 UTC]

You don't need dexterity to be an art student either, you just need a thesaurus. So long as you can come up with a meaningful explanation for each piece, you could stick a tack in the wall and say it conveys a sense of space, a void waiting to be filled, counterpointed with the physical reality of a three dimensional object or something like that. In fact, I think something similar's been done - if only in a Jasper Fforde novel.

And you ought to keep painting. Have you got any stuff uploaded?

salmonofdoubt In reply to Childsnake [2006-06-14 20:57:25 +0000 UTC]

My art exam is basically eight hours of doing anything you want; textiles, installations, making videos, even reading and eating chocolate if you're not too fussed about the mark you get. I just stick with painting because I find it the most relaxing. But yeah, no theory. That's all done as coursework.

A ripped egg carton... and an egg. Plethora indeed.

Brilliant job of painting it by the way - it certainly has character - the tonal variation, the almost-organic (torn) inner lining on the carton (yes, I did just say the egg carton is almost living; yes, I probably should seek medical advice...) which contrasts beautifully with the regular, smooth (inanimate) outer surfaces.

So how was your chemistry exam?

I'm just taking some time away from revising for S2, which is in just about seven hours fourty five minutes, so I may be behaving a bit stange(r than usual)

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

salmonofdoubt In reply to ThorUK [2006-06-09 18:40:27 +0000 UTC]

No, it was supposed to be like that. Maybe we both should.

My chemistry exam was alright, although unit 3 (the practical chemistry bit) was a bit of a pain. Either way, I'm glad it's all done....

S2? What were you doing up at one o'clock then, you foolish boy? And how went it?

You have C3 and C4 next week, don't you?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ThorUK In reply to salmonofdoubt [2006-06-11 03:07:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was fairly sure it was supposed to be, after all the previous egg cartons paintings, but it was reassuring to hear someone else say it (more so since it is by your very own intent the egg carton is flesh-like)

I think you did a slightly different course/option for chemistry than we did then, our practical skills were assessed during the course of the... course Edexcel (nuffied) I think, the Nuffield option pas a lot more practicals, but the only thing that means as far as I'm concerned is that you end up cramming the last two units in the space of less than a week (hence I'm not actually all that sure if the answers I gave for the unit 2 paper were entirely correct).

S2 was actually fairly easy, and 1 am isn't that late. The evening/night/morning before the Physics and DT: Systems and Control was considerably busier... Though the exams wents alright.

Yep, C3 and C4 and they're not giving those in my year any exam leave for it (since it's technically an A2 module :rolleyes. A day and a half to revise C3 and then a couple of days to learn C4 (properly).

So on to A2 now for you?

(sorry my post was so complantative, but I'm just tired of cramming/revising over the past week )

P.S. Actually, I find it fairly interesting to see someone develop an object through their art (especially if they happen to be good in that medium, as you undeniably are). Though an egg carton isn't overly interesting from a strictly aesthetic point of view, though it is (as many things) rich in contexts and connotations

P.P.S. Seeing a psychiatrist seems like an interesting idea, I've always wanted to know what an outside scientific approach to classifying my own neuroses (and perhaps even psychoses, thoguh I'm more doubtful of the latter) would yield

salmonofdoubt In reply to ThorUK [2006-06-12 11:13:29 +0000 UTC]

Oh, you lucky bastards. We did the normal Edexcel syllabus, which is apparently a lot more theory-based than Nuffield (just because eighty percent of my chem class want to be medics). And chemistry practicals are so much fun... *ahem*

We did parts of the unit 3 practical stuff as coursework, but the rest of it (organic chemistry techniques, describing titrations, predicting results for particular experiments) was done during the exam. Blah. Either way, I'm glad it's over.

One o'clock isn't late under normal circumstances, but I can't function in the morning if I don't get enough sleep.

Loads of people in my school do further maths, so we all get exam leave till Thursday.

Don't worry about the whinging. I've been a grumpy sod all month. *grin*

How'd C3 go, by the way? And good luck for Thursday.

ThorUK In reply to salmonofdoubt [2006-06-12 14:31:49 +0000 UTC]

Well I made a couple of stupid errors (like 4^2-3^2=5 and not recognising a quadratic equation when I see one, though you did have to do some trigonometric substitution to get there) at least, though the paper itself was fairly easy. Thank you for the good luck, I appreciate it (since I don't actually know what's on the C4 paper).

I can see why doing the practical during the exam would be unfavourable, though even coursework has its disadvantages (I only realised I wasn't wearing any safety glasses after the gaseous alkene caught fire ). I'm glad all of the revision for it is over TBH, the work we do for it is easy, it's just all that memorising...

Only three people in my chemistry set actually want to go into any kind of medicine, interestingly enough, though admittedly there are only eight of us (we're one of the two groups who took triple award for science GCSEs), and it wouldn't surprise me if the third group had a fair few more medics

Enjoy your study leave I guess, paint something, or write some poetry

Oh, I can't concentrate if I oversleep, I'm fairly used to sleep deprivation, so long as I wake up in the or close to the REM stage of sleep, I won't even feel lethargic!

salmonofdoubt In reply to ThorUK [2006-06-14 20:54:06 +0000 UTC]

Haha! It's when you can do complicated calculus that basic arithmetic deserts you, it seems. I have a mate who's a maths genius but has to think for long enough while she subtracts seventeen from twenty-three.

We don't do the practical during the exam. That would be fine. It's a theoretical, written exam based on practical techniques. Rubbish, says I.

Have fun tomorrow morning.

ThorUK In reply to salmonofdoubt [2006-06-22 23:25:11 +0000 UTC]

It certainly sounds like it (a theoretical exam on practical skills?, how preposterous!).

Fun, certainly sounds like such a temporary escape, supressing things seems to work better, though it does leave my memory somewhat lacking...

And yes, having started FP1, I've found basic arithematic slipping from my grasp as I become comfortable with the further material ^^:

Apparently they will introduce a new higher science GCSE composed of six 20-minute multiple-choice papers and one (one or two hour, I can't remember for sure) exam where you plot a graph or two (using given data of course, God forbid you have to interpret something with a little systematic or random error in it). Dare I say it - standards would appear to be slipping...
