Description A few days ago, after over three months of procrastinating on this piece, I thought I'd better get on my arse and finish it.

As I was already on my arse, this didn't seem like too much effort. However, thanks two English essays, two maths tests and too much chemistry to contemplate, it was. Anyhow, it's done. The original is here. [link]

I hope no one finds the title offensive, it isn't meant to be. It was originally supposed to be a Garden of Eden scene, before I saw all the possibilities.

Watercolours, on A-3. Any suggestions for improvement are welcome, although the more finicky should bear in mind that I won't be able to correct things easily, this being a watercolour. In fact, any comments at all will be gratefully recieved.... up to a certain extent. Cheers.

Edit: I changed the image to one in inverted colours and back again, because I'm so hideously indecisive. The inverted version's now in my scraps . Sorry if you got your message centre clogged up.

Cheers.

Nothing like, though. This is in watercolour for a start, and you need years of practice before reaching that sort of expertise.

Very nice, lots of little details making the piece so interesting. Perhaps that makes it a little cluttered though i am still undecided on that. Anyway i like it.

Onto me briefly (cos im vain) i havn't died or anything but this painting (yes the same one that has been going on for a good 3 months now) has taken up all my time but is looking damn good, and nearly complete! (finally) so should be around soon.

Yes, I was wondering about that too. I wanted a full background, and probably overdid it. Too late now. Thanks, though.

And onto you, glad you haven't died! Hope to see it up soon. Three months, eh? Better be worth it for all the time I've been waiting! Eurgh, exclamation marks.

Nice.. Are my eyes deceiving me or is it supposed to be in negative colors? Cause that blue-ish Eden somehow stings my eyes a bit too much
Nothing else to add. Nice. Good. Great.

Better like this?

Yes, I inverted the original colours, then changed my mind and chucked that version into my scraps.

And thanks, you're too kind.

Actually, yea. I like it better like this. Gives more of an Eden-impression..
And the critic is not to be thanked, the artist is. That's my policy in here

Very nice job and bringing in a younger spin to it with the title (one might hypothesise that Snow White was based on/meant in some way to reflect select biblical occurances), and a skillfull addition to the piece with the extended background - the trees retain the unsettling limb-like qualities, far more so t'ward the darkened edge of the piece - where the few glimpses of the shadows beyond create a brooding and threatening atmosphere - the detail and complexity of the wooden extremities suggesting something almost concious, yearning... In contrast to the benign outskirter, a slightly faded white here (a shame indeed, the lack of Babylonian gardens to decorate this space - Babylonian being used merely to suggest a level of gandeur, rather than suspension) - the rose leaves brightening the space, with the gently curving branches (rather than the jagged angular ones on the right)and the ripe fruit, again, suggesting a begign, even benevolent, nature...
Of the new work, I can not find flaw easily, perhaps only the size and shape of the crow or the lack of contrast on the outlying edges of the ground, albeit these are minor points, of little import on such a grand work. Well done!

I love the way you always find things I never actually intended... but am quite happy to say I did! I barely followed that bit about Babylon; I thought it was supposed to be biblically evil and degenerate? Although splendour and extravagance was also a part of it.... no matter, I like the thought anyway, so I'm going to adopt it. I'm still intrigued as to how you came up with it...

It's a raven, actually. The perspective's flawed, but I'm not changing that now. The contrast on the ground, or the other hand, I'll do my best to remedy. Thank you very much!

ThorUK In reply to salmonofdoubt [2005-10-23 00:16:27 +0000 UTC]

My knowledge of biblical bias is very limited, I was merely referring to the grandeur of the city and referring to the so called hanging gardens, built as a means to recreate the distant land of the queen (rich in flora and of no mean altitude) - an enviroment contrasted starkly by the surrounding harsh and flat terrain (the gardens are believed by some to have been stepped, so as to behave as a small mountain). If man has ever come close to creating something alike to Eden, it must have surely been the Hanging Gardens, more so for their contrast to the local climate; it struck me that a nearly solid wall of vivid green would've put the finishing touch to the background, as the Babylonian Gardens must've contained...

Ah, a raven, the largest of the crow family - the agnle on it seemed a bit steep - it's a comparatively weighty bird and in my experience they keep more to the horizontal than portayed in your painting, though my guess was close enough, as the features are rather unmistakable...

For all my criticisms (all there for constructive purposes) I would dearly love to see you attempt some similar scene - the style of the trees, in particular, if a little peculiar, does stick in the mind.....

Good to see you posting more work,

Ah, fair enough then. I have to admit my perspectives are flawed at best, especially when it comes to animals....

And I'm working on it, although I won't tell you what it is. Much more fun to leave it as a surprise! ...of sorts. Half term means more time to draw and paint, although it certainly feels like I'm more busy at the moment than I was during term time, bizarrely. Hope to see more of your work too, mate.

Yay, I admire your watercolour skills!!! *can't do it herself* I like the irony
Only thing I noticed, was that the woman in green is too short(her legs are) for the proportions she had otherwise... and her head is too wide, I mean, the "edge" of her head to our right should be a bit closer to her face... uhhh I hope you understood that explanation ^^"
And the detail on the trees and stuff is awesome

Like hell you can't! And thanks very much...

I did the two figures and the tree on the left over three months ago [link] and I've actually put most of that critique in the description there. I didn't like to repeat it. You're quite right about it all though, and it's clearly and tactfully put too. Cheers!

It's barely 'hiding'... In fact, it's in quite a prominent position. Well spotted though.

I put that in partially for your benefit and partially because I liked the symbolism.

I could only find the one on Love my favourite being either:

"arm in arm the lovers stand on the sausage of love looking out on the ketchup of their dreams"
or
"I love, respect, cherish and admire you for being the free and wonderful human being you are*" on the next page- "*except for when you're being REALLY ANNOYING"

and no but Nick does, and it is very Cazlike

I particularly like:

Sometimes, the Heart should follow the Mind.
Sometimes, the Heart hould tell the Mind
To Stay At Home and
STOP INTERFERING.

myself. But that second one I great.... I may borrow it.

And Nick has a Penguin book? Who is this marvellous bloke? *Gets kidnapping equiptment out* ....for the book, Will. For the book. Booknapping, then?

Incidentally, you need to give me your address sometime so I can send you a mad raving drawing.

Actually, it's Snow White taking the apple, which is why I made the comment about hoping no one would take offence at the irony. But I like the interpretation anyway! Thanks for commenting.
