Description

Crommus rex AN. is the biggest flying creature in the skies of Anu and also one its most dangerous predators . Eating anything its mouth can chew, they fly in pairs above the NCANs and present a distinctive characteristic: they present a six-part jaw, instead of four (Figure A.).  Their central jaw (that on other Tetragnatha is known as inner jaw) is adapted into a central jaw that pierce its prey and drag it to its mouth, an action that is used in flybys while hunting.

Great work! One of the best and most plausible sky whale concepts I've seen.

This design is absolutely fantastic! I am in love with that head design... it looks rather different from what we have seen from Anu so far but yet it fits in perfectly. There’s this sense of power and strength to the design that’s pretty astonishing. I can only imagine what it would be like to see one of those magnificent beast fly overhead

Thanks dude! I'm glad you like it!

Every 'land' creature of ANU shown until now (phylum Piocorporea) has a five part jaw. The thing is, they're not as visually obvious as this one.

You wouldn't last long after seeing one flying close to you, trust me

juniorWoodchuck In reply to Sanrou [2018-06-13 08:30:21 +0000 UTC]

You are most welcome!
Oh alright... I didn’t even notice. But yeah, I reckon it’s because it’s a lot more noticeable here and because the setup looks more familiar by Terran standards... almost dinosaur-esque in a way.
Well... that’s going out in style, if you ask me

Ps. there’s a also a nice bit of parallel thinking as my earliest designs for Auroran predators actually had a very similar tongue to this for hunting. It’s really fascinating how different minds can come up with similar solutions and designs... Maybe we are all just hard-wired to think of similar things

hahaha, right!
That happens often with a lot of folks! If I can put in myself a bit of art credit, Great minds think alike

juniorWoodchuck In reply to Sanrou [2018-06-17 19:22:34 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, it’s really quite fascinating how that happens sometimes...
But it looks a lot better on your design so I’m happy I did not use it and risk making you scrap the idea

Never worry about that mate, always do as you wish. Two versions of a thing is better than one

splendid...and I bet these were a big hit in the stuffed animal category - little kids all would want one, thus funding more missions to Anu.

great work!

Teejxamanbinnojol [2018-05-29 16:40:11 +0000 UTC]

Those wings do not look aerodynamically feasible, does the creature flap them like an insect?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sanrou In reply to Teejxamanbinnojol [2018-05-30 16:46:35 +0000 UTC]

For Earth, yes. Since the atmosphere of the planet is fairily more dense, the gravity only 21% of ours, and the internal anatomy of the creatures body is evolved to be light, the evolution path took it to a more gliding/swimming approach

Teejxamanbinnojol In reply to Sanrou [2018-05-30 20:13:10 +0000 UTC]

Fascinating! So the ecosystem is like an ocean above land.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sanrou In reply to Teejxamanbinnojol [2018-06-03 12:20:54 +0000 UTC]

Not quite. The high temperatures, strong wind currents and a low gravity don't let the atmospheric particles "glue" that well (the planet at its current form is in a perpetual greenhouse effect). If ANU was a bit more cold, problaby it would be that ocean above land

I love your world, and your art is superb!  This is easily one of the best xenobiology projects I have ever seen.  The C. Rex in particular catches my fancy, and it vaguely reminds me of a commercial jet, especially the head.

Hope you don’t mind me asking, but how dense is Anu’s atmosphere?

While I didn't put much thought in the specifics of it, I pictured about 30 and something at Lake Maria's level
