Again, I tried to have the dogs reflect something of the ethnicity of the girls where it was possible. For Mulan, I chose the Lowchen, not just because it's a native to China, but also because it really fit her with some minor modifications. For instance, the usual Lowchen has a face full of hair, and a little beard. I doubt Mulan would have liked that XD So I gave her a clean face. The 'haircut' is actually a show-standard one. It's called the 'lion cut', I believe. This cut especially seemed to fit the shape of her hair (her short haircut) .The background is this nifty picture of a hand-woven Chinese rug I found. I chose "honor" for Mulan because that's what she fights for- the honor of her family and ancestors.
EDIT: I found out recently that the book I was using for reference had the Lowchen's origins wrong. It was originally from Europe, apparently... Oops. Oh well...she's staying a Lowchen because I like it XD But just so you all know, apparently the Lowchen is NOT FROM CHINA. If anyone out there is an expert and can dispute/confirm this, let me know! I'm suddenly questioning ALL MY DOG CHOICES now....

In wikipedia they say that some of the lowchen's relatives could have come from Tibet.Look the breed up there.

I looked up a few more references and I think the book I was originally using was wrong, because that's what it said. *shakes head* I'm keeping her as a Lowchen but I'm changing the artist's comments XD

That's weird! You've managed to make it look like Mulan, while still retaining the look of a Lowchen! With the smooth clipped face it rather looks like a Portuguese Water Dog as well. Very beautiful, well done.
