Description This is a tutorial on how I do plushie faces with iron on transfer. This is Part 1 and Part 2 is here: [link]

NOTES: I've discovered with some time that doing the eyes in pencil with colored pencil for the color THEN ironing on, THEN inking the black is a better solution. If you ink before the ink has a tendency to stick to the paper but this problem is completely gone if you ink after. The only downside is that if you mess up you have to make it all over again ^__^;

Tools I use are are:
- iron on transfer paper (for dark fabrics)
- an iron
- a hard, non porous surface
- fabric (in this case, felt)
- Sakura Micron pen
- Prismacolor colored pencils
- sharp, small scissors
- a pin

First comment under this tutorial for a long time! Is the process for white background faces (like Suki from Avatar: The Last Airbender when wearing her Kyoshi Warrior makeup as a good example) the same except for the fact that you need iron-on transfer paper for white fabrics? Just want to be sure what to do when my plushie partner Caroline-chan5 manages to send me Suki's face! Thanks in advance!

If you are printing them from the computer, then yes you probably could use the on white transfer stuff. Just remember it will reverse when you transfer it

Took your advice from your reply on Twitter and used the iron-on transfer paper for fabrics with color......SUCCESS! Thanks again Sakky!

Urghhh >.< My Iron-On transfer paper is not liking me drawing on it with ANYTHING. I have a Micron pen and it does work mostly, but the iron-on part still flakes off

SarahForde In reply to PandanaLove [2013-09-26 20:26:42 +0000 UTC]

Not micron pens! Those are the WORST. Ball point pens seem to work best, especially fine point ones.

Are you using iron on paper for dark fabrics?

PandanaLove In reply to SarahForde [2013-09-26 20:37:37 +0000 UTC]

I thought you said micron lol my bad >.<

....no....but I figured maybe the fact I chose light fabric transfer is why it messed up so I went and got a dark iron-on transfer paper. ON TOP OF THAT, I chose one that kids can color on before transferring apparently just to make sure that it would work well enough for the job lol

Thanks for the awesome tutorial, have you ever tired using the computer printer fabric, same idea as the printer paper, but fabric sheets instead.  I get them from Jo-anns (not sure they have one in your area), they seem to work pretty well too and bonus, no paper to peel off, just cut and iron on! They're a little more than the paper, but if you have coupons, it's totally worth it!  I use copic markers, haven't tried using my prisma color pencils though.

Oh you know, I've seen it but I haven't tried it. I probably should. I wonder how well I could draw on it?

Tygermane In reply to SarahForde [2013-08-13 00:02:02 +0000 UTC]

I draw my eyes onto it and it works very well.  Doesn't bleed or run.  I've only used it a couple times though.

SarahForde In reply to Maw1227 [2013-01-19 04:27:27 +0000 UTC]

because they would be kind of lumpy, I don't think it would work very well

I dont think i realized you did this before, haha... iv seen this before, and maybe thats how i was led to your stock photos, but have you ever printed your designs on there?

I found that, then this tutorial again, and i was just wondering cause you say it dries out your markers. (I personally have never experimented with iron on stuff so I dont know whats left from right. haha.)

Sakky, I've had great success with my 1st plushie (thanks to your video). However, I've forgotten what photo paper setting to use with my inkjet printer when using HP Media Smart Photo: matte, semi-glossy or glossy. Which would you recommend? (I'm going to need this soon; I'm making my 2nd plushie.) Thanks in advance for your reply!

Hmmm I don't print mine I draw on them so I'm not sure. You should read the slip that comes with the paper? I'm sure it says on it

Ok. I know that you said to use dark t-shirt transfer paper for creating the eyes, but what if the plushie is made from ivory (off-white) felt? Would I still have to use that kind? Or, would white transfer paper work for it (my first plushie will be made from ivory-colored felt)? Thanks in advance for your reply!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

SarahForde In reply to Freespirit81 [2011-05-20 10:36:50 +0000 UTC]

Yes you have to use the dark transfer paper because of the way it's applied (the light transfer paper is done in reverse and it doesn't have the "white" part). If you tried it you'd see what I mean but don't try it, it just makes a mess xD

Never mind sakky; I just saw the part where it mentions using felt.

I'm tired! Good night! (lol)
