Description Clouds of dust and gas blow over the cold terrain as meteors break up in the alien atmosphere.

A lone extraterrestrial plant can be seen inhabiting the rocky terrain, it's tendrils stretching towards one of the planets moons.

I spent ~12 hours on this during free time at college and at home.

Painted in photoshop, everything painted or generated from scratch.

Dimensions of original, approx 8000x3600 (I cropped it a bit)

oh right! and if you have a wacom tablet, try the felt tips, a bit odd at first, but gives you so much more control, unlike the default tips which can be like drawing on glazed ceramic tile with a sharpie.

is it a bamboo? You can still use felt nibs with that but you have to buy them.

It's when you give someone a bunch of useless shiny-metal-round-things and get not-so-shiny useful pen nibs XD

Money is gross, it's one of the most germ/filth ridden everyday objects, and you touch it all the time. I try to avoid spare change as much as possible, and prefer just using my debit card to shop.

random rant done

yay, thanks!
I've been practising a bit from time to time, mostly I just tried to stop my shading from looking like playdough. (use contrasting colours and many shades, add rim lighting and bounce lighting where it should be)
I also learned to use photoshop brushes (you only need the basic ones) and tablet properly. Use many flow settings and set flow control to pen pressure. Use soft brushes with certain settings for soft general shading, ie, skin, and harder brushes for slightly sharper shading, and general use. Use a brush with low circularity (calligraphic tip) and change the brush angle often for sharp lighting, like on teh rocks

(same in gimp-sauce)

Sai is great for manga type artwork. I prefer photoshop myself

elements is still good. you don't have many filters, but your painting, not editing photos
I just used the basic brushes with pen pressure for a combination of opacity, flow, and size. I also used the basic brushes, just size and softness with different angles and circularities. I should also have used a bit of hue and jitter and brush scatter to give the rocks more texture, but I didn't think of it at the time. for the background I used the add noise filter, then fractalize to average the noise into larger dots, then levels, then hue/sat, then blur, then a bit more noise. I made another finer noise layer and used a layer mask to paint in for the other star effects. (nebula, and swishy stars with radial blur). Other than that everything was painted by hand
