nice job man, i remember doing the same model and it was quite a pain.
as far as details go i think you did a pretty good job 2!
1 thing tough, the gun on the side sponson looks to little.

This was not a pain in any way. Just some minor difficulties.

I don't see your model in your gallery -- did you finish it ?

Details are still a subject for a change. I usually make a break, look on the model after some time & alter stuff.

i the chassis just under the head being quite difficult to get rght, or something. i never uploaded the model cause it wasent finished and then me hdd crashed loosing the max files.....

but i never did it as good as you tought!!

and do you have the physical model or do you use picturs as a ref?

SerpentTheGreen In reply to UnleasheDDesigns [2012-05-02 13:13:04 +0000 UTC]

Pictures. Photos of unassembled kits help sometimes, too.
I ain't that big fan so I think I have better ways to spend 100+ euros they ask for a model.

hehehe way to expesive to model from that! yes the unassembled kits help me alot!
What sites do you use for your refs?

i mostly use dakkadakka, forgeworld.

Whatever google brings in.
Dakkadakka has a lot of interesting stuff, but alas, most photos suck ass. I don't quite unerstand that. Why spend time & money and make cool mini and then ruin overall display because u didn't buy simpliest lightbox ? I don't ask for photos made with hasselblad & studio envirinment, just make a decent photo, respect your own work, FFS.

hehehe, lots of people just paint 4 layers of paint over the details
buy a light box? hell just make one already, anyone playing warhamer40k could do that!!!

saying that my light setup in 3ds max also isnt really good

There are ppl, who buys painted models & stuff, 'cause they can't make it right themselves.
An acquaintance of mine used to do this for some exra buck. So not everyone who plays can make it

'Bout you light setup -- just use moar lights for starters. Use some kicker lights.
Or add GI & HDR lightning if u can afford much more rendering time. (Also, HDR environment works magic on metals, 'cause they mostly reflect light model and not diffuse it )

UnleasheDDesigns In reply to SerpentTheGreen [2012-05-03 16:33:41 +0000 UTC]

that true but everyone osting there pic on dakkadakka painted it themself, and was referring to those.

thanks for the advice, altough i dont know what a kickerlight is, but i can use vray form a friend and that renders alot beter even with jsut a basic setup. as far as hdr lighting i will look for some nice tutorials.

But do you have a 40k army yourself?

SerpentTheGreen In reply to UnleasheDDesigns [2012-05-03 17:14:48 +0000 UTC]

Kicker is basically additional soft light. I use HDR for overall lightning and two colored area lights (one on top and one behind camera ) to add some color & accent.

You can use tutorials not for 3D, but ones for photographers like photographing small objects or portraits.

Nope. I just read books, play DoW a bit & model stuff. Tabletop games are not very popular here - not much shops, clubs, etc.

ok i see what you mean in 3ds max it basicly a plane with self illuminating material, i use that mostly in vray cause mentalray kinda sucks overall.

and great tip on the photographing tutorial, i never tought of that.

i dont play the game either but just having so;e cool models standing on your desk is just awesome! dow is awesome 2 and you should try the new rpg space marine if youre into that kinda games!

Some parts are obviously densely detailed but other parts are pretty plain like the large plate in the middle of the body and another plate behind the turret

maybe add some soldier bags or ammo/gas cans, that sort of thing?

other views would be cool like other side, top, rear etc

SerpentTheGreen In reply to 543Bs0Za [2012-05-02 08:24:43 +0000 UTC]

Not all geometry detail is in place, so when it's done -- there'll be more.

I think I'll remodel whole rear part of the turret -- make it an ammo drum instead of a box.
