They look great!  How did the foam hold up to wearing?

Hey! The foam, did absolutely great! The shoes look like they did after I made them! I was surprised of this myself!

Ooo... I found this completely by accident, but it's so helpful to see! I've been trying to find a good way to make Ventus's (Kingdom Hearts) shoes, but I really didn't like the other tutorials for his shoes out there. I was actually thinking something involving craftfoam, but couldn't get much further than that... This is perfect!

Wow, these look really good.
I started playing LoL somewhere last week and Vi was a free character and I have just fallen in love with her... so naturally I want to cosplay her at some point haha. This gives me a really good idea of what to do with the shoes.
How do you plan on handling the arms and such? Personally I would love to use papercraft, to get it in full detail, but I have never worked with that before (you have to import the model in one program, then edit it so it will actually work as a paper model, then make it printable....) it's going to be a lot of work! I want to make the fingers out of foam though, so that if I 'punch' things there won't be any dents. I'm still thinking about what to cover the paper (or cardboard really) with to make it harder.
I'd love to hear your approach

I'm working on the hands right now and I'm making them out of foam. The game model's fingers are too short (they lack one piece of finger from all of them), so i made my own. I'll post some tutorial on it soon

Bloodstained-Snow In reply to ShinjusWorkshop [2013-06-17 15:06:50 +0000 UTC]

Great, I'm looking forward to it
In the meantime I also decided to make them out of foam (with latex on top and a core) so I can actually 'punch' people with them haha.
I'm working on gathering some random accessories and such first, because I have several other projects to finish before I can start ^^

Yeah, getting to punch people with them is a great plus! Looking forward to that!

Just a note on the tutorial itself- I think the original image and finished product pic should be side by side at the bottom so people can see the comparison. Just a thought ^^

So... You mentioned mixing latex with acrylics... And I was wondering... What kind of latex have you used so far? (what brand?)

Dunno, if you remember me, but I was also in the EuroCosplay with you, in the Haven Trooper cosplay. And yeah... I have pretty bad expirence with foam shoes and acrylics. -.-'

ShinjusWorkshop In reply to Si3art [2013-05-08 19:49:00 +0000 UTC]

It's an italian brand called Prochima. It's the only latex I could find in romania... and of course I remember you I just didn't know this was your dA account

Aoime [2013-05-08 16:44:54 +0000 UTC]

Really like it So when you painted the mandarin costume, you added latex to the acryls? Didn't it kill the brushes? : O

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ShinjusWorkshop In reply to Aoime [2013-05-08 18:57:18 +0000 UTC]

Yes, it killed a lot of brushes! But I bought plenty of cheap ones. Also, I used sponge/foam to paint, too... it doesn't leave brush strokes

Looks better than the original while still keeping the same look, only smoothed out and brought to live. Looks like it's gonna be great when you finish it with this quality of craftsmanship.

You definitely did give it more realistic view and life. Ive seen some work done of LoL with Steve Wang he really does a good job at bring things to life (in sculpture has one of Katarina and Ziggs) but seeing it as a cosplay will be quite something too.

ShinjusWorkshop In reply to sryates [2013-05-10 10:16:42 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, Steve Wang is awesome! I find cosplay harder to keep close to the reference, because whatever it is it has to be wearable..

Yeah I know the feeling, I design costumes myself though I don't post most of my work and I always have issues figuring out the "how to make a person fit" in it issue.

ShinjusWorkshop In reply to sryates [2013-05-14 09:49:06 +0000 UTC]

I think my biggest problem is attaching systems... how to make all the armor/whatever parts stay will attached to the rest of the body/costume... that can be a problem if it's not done well...

sryates In reply to ShinjusWorkshop [2013-05-14 17:44:15 +0000 UTC]

Master Lee (makes Iron Man Armor suits professionally) Uses rivets and plastic, from my research into older styles this is actually very common place, as long as your medium is leather or harder you can use this method to create good movement in armor what kind of rivets you use is up to you but a rivet kit isn't that expensive and a good long term investment. Quit and easy way to attach things as long as you have holes with foam though you might just glue it to a inner spandex suit while attached to a duct tape dummy. That way you get the movement you want without the fuss. But foam isn't the best long term medium but if you don't plan on using the costume for too long it's a good way to go, just doesn't last sadly. If you can manage to tool it leather would be better for long term gives you great options for workability it's tough to cut but when painted it really can pull off a good metal look without having to use sheet metal and forming.

Oh, I know about rivets, I dream of them for quite a while but.... I'm having a hard time finding rivets in Romania... I know it seems unbelievable, but trust me, this is how things work here... I buy more than 50% of the materials I need from outside Romania, just because I can't find them here...

JazionKeera In reply to ShinjusWorkshop [2013-05-16 17:51:49 +0000 UTC]

Figured I'd jump in here, have you considered using paper fasteners? We use them on foam to help fasten pieces together and keep a range of motion, you can put washers at the back so that the foam doesn't get damaged as well. They're pretty easy to find in stationery shops, though rivets are still pretty hard to beat.

ShinjusWorkshop In reply to JazionKeera [2013-05-17 07:29:05 +0000 UTC]

Speaking of those, actually I just found some to buy and i'll try them out. I have a problem both with rivets or paper fasteners... they are visible on the outside sometimes the costume is made so I must not have any attaching systems visible on the outside... then I must rely on glue only. And glue does not seem that reliable to me...

JazionKeera In reply to ShinjusWorkshop [2013-05-21 16:49:49 +0000 UTC]

I see, I use them as detailing a lot of the time. Glue holds together pretty well for me, using shoe glue for my foam armours and I've never had an issue with the glue not sticking.

Ahh, well you can try leather suppliers they sell rivets usually several types, you might be able to order them I really can't say what kinds of products you could get in Romania as here in the US I can walk down the street to the local hardware store or the leather supply and get them for fairly reasonable prices. So I'm not sure what to tell you other than google/shopping probably has it. Without rivets you could always try something like "Dome Cap Nuts" and bolts using the rounded side in and the other side cut down. Might be easier to come by but I don't know.

Thanks for the tips, i might try to find those... also... no leather supplies here It took me forever to find a guy who sells leather (only leather). Yeah, it really sucks here to find materials, it's always a struggle!
