Description This is WIP on the cape. The fist two photos on the left were taken right after the two sides of the cape were sewn together. They don't look that great in the photo, because they needed some good ironong. On the right you can see the paint on the cape. The whole costume will be made of an awesome black wool fabric that I happened to find among my fabrics. It looks rich, noble and fit for a cold climate. The top photo is the outside of the cape. What can I say? Stencil with adhesive tape /adhesive paper and two layers of acrylic paint mixed with some golden dust. In the lower photo you can see only one layer pf paint and the stencil made of masking tape.

This is a joint project of me and Cladi, a friend. We're working together on her Ashe costume, while I'm teaching her stuff. She's been a very smart and handy student so far

Hello! Your cape is amazing. I was wondering what method you used to pattern out the design with the tape. I am trying to paint on fabric and the paint keeps running under the tape creating an uneven edge and yours look amazing. Please help. Thank you!!!

Hey! Keep the paint as dry as possible and buy a thick one. If it's too watery, it will tend to run around. Also, the type of material matters a lot, some absorb the paint badly. I would suggest do some experiments before picking up everything. I used acrylic paint and the fabric was some sort of wool. I don;t think I can help more with this...

Thanks. I found a way. Use clear gesso as a base, then gold acrylic. Works amazing! Completely straight edges.

Hello! Very amazing cosplay. :3 I have a question. You mixed the paint and the golden dust in a tube, or you did it on the fabric? Because I wonder if I could mix it if I use acrilic spray on the fabric and then put the dust on it, or not. : )

As far as I remember, I mixed the golden dust and the acrylic paint beforehand. Not sure how the spray and dust will turn out, I advice making some tests first. It all depends on the fabric, but I think what you are attempting is pretty complicated. My experiments of spray of fabric turned out quite fails...

Thank you so much!: ) I think I won't buy acrilic spray then.

thank you for the detailed answer i was searching so long for a good and cheap alternative to normal fabricpaint... it never became completly opaque, but stayed always a bit transparent.
maybe i can also try it someday on a costume.
would you recommend that latex/acrylic - paint technique for drawing slim lines on latex or spandex/lycra tights? ( am planning to do ashlotte from soul calibur 4) (and now i will go and take a look at your wip pics at fb )

You are welcome! So you would basicly like to paint the stokings? Hm... the problem with latex is that it tends to shrink a bit, but only if it's in a bigger quantity. Painting with black is better, you always need one layer. Colours like white, yellow, red, or anything light will need more than one layer, depending on the paint. I suggest you make a test first and I also suggest you have somebody your size wear the stockings and you paint on them, already stretched to your size. I think it will look better as an overall result and it will reduce the risk of cracking. the thing is when you add latex to the paint, you usually add just a small amount (1/4, 1/3 of the amount of paint you have there, but that may not be enough for very elastic fabrics such as lycra. So you would need more latex. But then I don't think it will look as good. It will have a shiny/fake look and you will risk having it shrink. But if you paint it on the needed size (yours), then you won't need to stretch it too much while wearing it. I really hope I made sense. And sorry for the long answer!

oh, i am really happy that you took your time and gave me such a detailed, long answer. x3
basically, i'd like to paint white tights/stockings with black colour (in thin lines). i already got the legs of a male display dummy, he will do the streching job for me (his name is johnny-boy, but i am glad he consists only of legs... i'd feel really strange to put latex-tights to a male manequin and then let him "watch" me do the paint job XD)
a shiny and fake look would not be bad, as Ashlotte is an android and her legs ar made out of some kind of white metal, plastic or something like that. so i guess i will try some variants, also with half latex/half acrylics when i got the right solution for me, i can let you know if you want thank you anyway for your help till now x3

wow, the painting looks really good! but i just hope the acrylic color won't break or go off when you wash it <.< is it really normal paintcolour? i have heard that mixing acrylic color with latex makes it elastic and not as easy to break... but dunno how it works on fabric ._. normal paintcolour would be a cheap alternative x3

Ok, let me answer all your questions: so... the acrylic breaks from the fabric only if you REALLY use that part... The costume will not be washed, only dry cleaned. Yes, it's regular acrylic paint. I tried fabric paint before and it was really a big disappointment to me... harder to work with, more expensive and for sure not waterproof! Yes, mixing the regular acrylic paint with a bit of latex clearly helps! But golden is usually a problem (at least in my case), so after doing a bit of testing on pieces of fabric, we (Cladi and I)decided to leave it without latex. If you check my other photos, my Mandarin Spawn cosplay has an apron in front, painted with yellow. That yellow part is acrylic paint mixed with latex. It became waterproof, because it has the texture of rubber, a bit... You can see WIP photos of the apron on my FB page, I think I posted them there...
