My entry for the contest hosted by

The title of this piece is so original, is it not? In my defense, "Unravel" is such a crazy good Ghoul song I couldn't not make a reference to it. I was particularly inspired to draw something based on the 'As the two intertwine, two shall perish' line, it fits Kaneki's story so well...

To be honest though, I'm not very happy with how this piece turned out. It seems a bit stilted to me, though there are also bits I really like. For me, Tokyo Ghoul does two things very well. One of them is depicting "insanity", the other is depicting "quiet tragedy".
Here, I tried my best to capture that insanity and desperation that marks Kaneki's change from human to ghoul, particularly as he goes from "Eyepatch" to "Centipede", by referencing both Kaneki's loss of sanity as his kakuja develops, his agony during his fight with Arima, and the internal dialogue he has with his former self, at the end of the manga. I really loved that last part, it was so beautiful and sad! I tried to show how, while Ghoul Kaneki is tearing himself apart in his desperate struggle to fulfill his selfish desire to protect those he cares about, his Human self is desperately to keep himself from falling apart, begging his Ghoul protector to please, please stop, and rest.

...but like I said, I kinda feel like I failed to give this piece the emotional impact I wanted it to have. Perhaps I would have achieved a better result if I'd gone with the "quiet tragedy" feel I mentioned before, though I'm glad to have tried something like this as well

Anyway, as always, I'd be happy to hear your thoughts!

It was selfish, wasn't it? He thinks he was doing something selfless by collecting other ghouls' powers to make himself stronger in order to "protect" those he care about but it really lead to nowhere and it made him nearly lost his mind.
Great job on this piece tho I like it.

Yeah, Tokyo Ghoul was such a well-written tragedy with Kaneki's story line...RE has its moments as well, though I'm not as fond of it as the first series. Yet. Though recent developments are certainly interesting! And thanks for your kind words, I'm glad you like my work ^^

I think the piece turned out great. The impact even in thumbnail size makes you wonder and want to see it full size, and I love the colors. The softness of the bottom part is very beautiful, the line in the center of all of it, it looks really good. And I think Kaneki looks great. overall I think this simply is really awesome and worked out great, and I loev to read the explanation behind it, so it's an extra for that. So yeah, the colors were the big win that catches attention and makes you see everything else.

I started Tokyo Ghoul at the time I did Rainbow actually, one episode from each to see which I'd continue. Needless to say I went for Rainbow, but I kept checking stuff through fan art and through one of my friends who I presented Rainbow to. Is the manga finished already? On that aspect I'm a bit lost (just like I was with Rainbow lol)

As always, thank you for your extensive comments I'm very glad to hear you like this piece!

I would recommend watching Tokyo Ghoul, and it's second season. Personally I preferred the manga's version of events (the second season changes some stuff around), but the anime is well animated and still tells a good story. It may, however, leave you hanging at the end, but the manga has already ended and a sequel series, set a couple of years after the events in the first manga, is currently running, with a new chapter every week, so eventually we'll get our answers

You're quite welcome I felt this particular piece showed a lot of thinking/planning

I found Tokyo Ghoul manga precisely because of the Jason(? I think that's he's name) stuff so I already knew some bits and pieces. The first season seems quite nice, but I heard about the changes in the second season kind of made me a bit disappointed (if I can say that, considering I don't know the actual storyline of that part). So it has a sequel, that's good to know. Thanks yet again for filling me in with manga information!

I think the anime (1st & 2nd season combined) isn't altogether bad, when it isn't compared to the manga. Like I said, I personally prefer the manga, for me it had more emotional impact and most of my favourite scenes occurred only in the manga. Then again, the ending of the 2nd season was very heartfelt as well. So if you want to get into Tokyo Ghoul, I would recommend considering the anime a stand alone/AU kinda thing, it probably saves you some frustration. The only thing I really think the anime handled very poorly (in the 1st season), was the character Tsukiyama. He's a bit of a strange character either way, but the anime took his weirdness to such levels that it became rather grating. He's voiced by Miyano Mamoru, and normally I absolutely adore his acting, but he hammed it up a bit too much for my taste
And on a side note, if you do end up watching the anime, find yourself an uncensored version, else the fight scenes lose their impact and the horror/gore element kinda falls flat on it's face

Really like your depiction of Ken's two sides fighting for control.
